#122, Kristy In Charge

I have begun to re-read some good ol' Baby Sitter's Club books. I mentioned to Katie about a month ago or so that I had a hankering to re-read them. ALL OF THEM. I also would like to collect them. This wouldn't be so big a task had I kept all of the ones I used to have... but I believe I let go of them when I gave them to Chi Trang to sell at a garage sale. Annnnyway, I decided that in order to make my reading of these books worthwhile, I will write a mini blog/summary of these books on my blog. So... let's have at it!

Plot/Conflict: The students of Stoneybrook Middle School (SMS) can participate in a program named Teachers of Tomorrow (TOT) that allows them to teach a class for 3 days of one week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Kristy gets a gym class, which would normally be ideal, if it wasn't for that Cary Retlin--some dude who does what any other middle school kid would do given a position of authority, goof off. Kristy is NOT okay with this, as she intends to use her teaching time as a means of showing her gym coach how to be a better coach. Mallory, a sixth grader, is assigned to an 8th grade English class. Crying ensues.

Introduction of Characters: Kristy introduces the characters by going through each one and naming what subject they'd be best at teaching, whilst giving general character traits necessary at the beginning of each BSC novel.

Featured Characters: Kristy & Mallory. A sprinkling of Claudia (and her horrific spelling) and Mary Anne

Babysitting Story: Vanessa Pike becomes obsessed with teaching and forces her siblings to be a part of her class. She is a tyrant. And a brat. Someone slap her.

90's References: "I loaded a tape into the boom box. Sam had lent it to me when he came home the night before. It was called Jock Jam, and it had only high-powered, super-energizing music on it." -- Kristy. That about says it all, doesn't it?

Quotes: Kristy describing Claudia, "Claudia's class would have to be art. She lives and breathes it. She even looks like art. I'm not kidding. Today she was wearing a long-sleeved white T-shirt on which she'd painted a bald man's head from a side view. All the lines were sharp, not natural at all. his nose was purple, his eyes were orange, and his skin was green. Jagged yellow lines like lightning bolts sizzled around his head." Srsly, who came up with this stuff?

COMING SOON: Top 10 of 2010

I just remembered that last year I put up a list of my top 10 tracks/artists/albums from 2009. I love doing that kind of thing on Last.FM so I'll definitely do it again this year. I got curious and wanted to see who I had right now. I'm just hoping I don't start listening to certain songs in order to raise their likelihood of being on my list--and perhaps bumping some more embarrassing things off.

As of right now I only really remember one... so we'll see how that goes. I do have quite a few road trips ahead of me. The list will most likely be coming up January 3rd, as that is the first Monday after the new year (and that's when I did it last year!) :) I don't know why this post was worthy of writing, but I felt it was, so I did it.

Also, a reminder. You will definitely see her on my list, and you must not judge me. KE$HA was a huge part of my life in early 2010. :) What can I say, her love was my drug.

BOOK CRAZY!! BOOKPEOPLE--IAMABOOKPERSON!

This post's title reads exactly how I feel. I'm super duper ADD about books right now.

Last night I bought two when Schutte and I went to Half Price. I got Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro--I decided I liked Never Let Me Go enough to read his better known book--and George Eliot's Silas Marner. I remember having to read it in Mrs. Stockinger's class in 10th grade... and I think I liked it? Lisa has said that she LOVES it, so I figured I'd give it another try.

I just want to read! I want to read SO MUCH! So... here are my goals for this winter break. I, in no way, expect to actually be able to finish all of these, but ideally... this is what I will finish over the next week and a half or so:

1. Elizabeth & Mary by Jane Dunn (this is probably the one that will definitely not be finished).
2. Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen
3. Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
4. Silas Marner by George Eliot
5. Naked by David Sedaris (I'm already halfway done, so this should be easy... and because I love him... despite the fact I'm not white)
6. Lost in Austen by Emma Campbell Webster (this is a Choose Your Own Jane Austen Adventure book. How could I forget this one?)

I'll update you on my progress... or rather, you'll know when you see my review. :)

You Reap What You Sow, Right?

In this case, it's been a good thing. These past few days, I've gotten tons and tons of shtuff from my students. Mostly sweets (there's currently a package of assorted Ghirardelli chocolates staring me in the face), a scarf (keeping my neck warm), multiple Starbucks gift cards (boy, do I need them), a candle, and a painting of a musical Christmas tree ornament... just to name a few. I've written thank you cards for about 1/3 of the students (all the ones who gave me something prior to today), but there was a giant influx of items today and I haven't been able to keep up.

I'm taking this as a sign that the kids really do maybe actually like me, or that, at least, their parents think I'm worthy of showing appreciation for the holidays. I'll try to snap a picture of my mound of student goodies, and maybe even a photo of myself today. I look kind of awesome... just saying. Schutte and I went shopping last night and I bought a cute ugly/tacky Christmas sweater. There was one really really ugly Christmas vest, but I had already drawn the line. I belted it (it was kind of big), side pony-tailed my hair, put on a headband with antlers on it, and has since been told by a couple of students that I look like a teenager. GOOD. Cause that's what I was going for. :)

Tonight: CPI Christmas Party--Charter Bus to Salt Lick!
Tomorrow: Third Annual Christmas Potluck with The Gang
Saturday: Dallas! :)

Mo' Money, Mo' Problems... No Money... Still Problems...

What's my problem?

Money's been tight. Incredibly tight... but it's the holidays and I spend like I have all the money in the world. It makes me incredibly happy and is really satisfying too. Yesterday, some friends (Schutte, Buddy, Kristi, LC and her friend Ellie) and I went to Big Lots and bought a buttload of toys. It was so fun! :) Diana also bought some and we brought them to school and put them in our boxes in front of Camerati and shamed them for not contributing to the toy drive. I then pointed out that some of the things we bought were for $1, or $1.50 or $3, etc. and that if they all brought just one toy, it would make such a big difference. We'll see how that goes.

Ugh, I love Christmas. I love love love love LOVE Christmas. I don't know if it beats Tet for me, but it definitely is AWESOME!

An Extension of Christian Louboutin Love

Check out this blog. It's titled "Louboutin Love Fest."

I had a dream last night in which it was my wedding and I was completely unaware of the fact. When I did become aware, one of my first concerns was that I didn't have shoes. I was going to have to wear ugly shoes for my wedding. Either ugly, crusty, old white clunky shoes that I had from when I was... 10, or I'd have to go to Payless and buy some cheap shoes. And NOT my beloved Christian Louboutins that I've been lusting after since before I was engaged (i.e., NOW). So... I started googling and check out these that were on the aforementioned blog.

Loving the baby blue inside the shoe

Obvious Reason Why Thomas is Wonderful - #10

He loves to learn.

He's got a thirst for knowledge... look at the most recent thing he's learned:
cuz christian is from paris
did you know that? his first name is christian and not louie?
Christian Louboutin. NOT Louie Vitton
These things are dreadfully important. I'm glad he knows the difference. Oh and Thomas, to add to your fashion knowledge bank, it's Louis Vuitton, and he's also from Paris. :)

P.S. Do I talk about shoes enough that I seriously already had a shoe tag on my blog? Awesome.

PBS Masterpiece Mystery: Sherlock Holmes = AMAZING

Masterpiece Mystery: Sherlock

Okay. So... over two months ago, my brother sent my sisters an e-mail telling us to watch the Sherlock series that had started on PBS. He stated that one of the stars was Martin Freeman, the man who played Tim from the original office (and the one that's in that incredibly awkward couple in Love Actually).

I finally watched it last night while I had some free time. Schutte was out of town and Thomas was, as per usual, in Waco, so after watching the new Sherlock movie on tv, Johnny and I headed off to bed and I, not being used to going to bed before midnight, was too tired to read a book. Instead, since I was in the Sherlocky mood anyway, I decided to get all up ons the show my brother had suggested before.

I only watched the first episode, and I was already in love in the first 10 minutes or so. They're about an hour and a half long. They remind me of old Poirot episodes I'd randomly catch and watch at night when I was little.

Anyway, I think part of the reason that I like Sherlock so much is because he's a mixture between two of my favorite people ever. The first of which is super obvious--after all, the show is loosely based on Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock HOLMES = Gregory HOUSE. See it??? Anyway, also, Bones. But that's just probably because she's also an incredibly brilliant genius that's kind of hard to get along with.

And who doesn't love Martin Freeman? Also, it says he's to play Bilbo Baggins?! OMG my life is about to be amazing, isn't it? :)

Okay, go watch. There needs to be more episodes NOW, but... I guess that's all you get for now... 3 episodes online to watch--do it!

I'm Just a Big Puffy Marshmallow

A few weeks ago, one of my students lied to me. A big lie, too. It affected another teacher and that teacher in turn wrote a referral for her and instructed me to do the same. As I am a sub, I am not privy to the proper channels of writing up a student with a referral, so Diana had to e-mail one of our assistant principals to figure out what to do. We had not yet heard back from the principal, and I became unsure if this is even worth looking into anymore since the time had kind of passed, and she was already getting in trouble for it.

Since the student lied to me, she hasn't spoken to me at all and has avoided all eye contact with me. Today, the student came up to me and said "Miss Nguyen, I need to talk to you." Picture a student about 8 inches taller than me, looking at me like I might shoot daggers from my eyes. She was looking uber sheepish. I just nodded and said, "Okay, what's up?" And then she said, "I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for that day, and it's all been taken care of, and... I'm just really sorry I did that to you." And then she leaned down and gave me a hug. I feel like I could've been a hardass and said something "I hope you learned your lesson"-y, but instead, I just went with, "Well, I really appreciate that." Because I did. She didn't have to say anything to me ever again, but she came to me on her own volition and apologized.

The Tale of DANCE DANCE RACHELUTION!

Tonight, Buddy, Johnny and I will be making our way towards College Station for our third installation of Rachel Acevedo's off-the-chain dance party. (Please refer to here and here if you don't know what I'm talking about.)

This time we're joined by three new members! Thomas, Schutte and Nick! We are all staying in a double bed hotel room. So... we'll see how that goes! IT'LL FEEL LIKE COLLEGE ALL OVER AGAIN!

THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME! Pictures to come after the weekend I'm sure.

Oh yeah and Johnny's bday is Saturday night. This is going to be a roooooough weekend.

For One More Day by Mitch Albom

Grade: C+ or B (depending on how you look at it)

Maybe I'm being hard on this book, I don't know. I did devour 75% of it in a couple hours, but I don't know if that was because it was that good, or because I was that much in want of another book to finish. I finished it the day after I finished Never Let Me Go. That being said, I STARTED the book back in... May. I think I had it on my trip to Boston with Buddy. I tried to read it on my flight back, but I'm pretty sure sleep took over. [Again, not sure if that is indicative of my true feelings of this book.]

Maybe after reading Tuesdays with Morrie, and then after that, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, another book surrounding themes of death and mortality and legacies and stories left behind... I don't know, I felt a little blah. Maybe if this was the first one I read, I'd have felt like it taught me a more profound message (Hence, the B)... but it was a little too much like Five People and I guess the semi-mini-twist at the end felt like an afterthought... a "I'm gonna throw this in here just to wow the reader." Kind of like a singer deciding at the last second to hold a note longer and maybe even try to go up a half step or so... but instead of the intended effect of "Oh shit, she's awesome," it was just awkward and made her miss her next entrance.

It follows the story of Charley "Chick" Benetto and his life--but not really. Essentially, it's his story of an extra special day he had with his mother. Maybe if I thought about the book more, I'll like it more, but where I stand right now, a few days after reading it, I'm underwhelmed. I actually can't even really think of what happens in it. So maybe if I remembered, I'll go "OH YEAH THE BOOK WAS AWESOME," but I think it's definitely is a sign that I DON'T remember any of it, because--and most of my friends can attest to this--I REMEMBER EVERYTHING!

Oh, I did just remember one thing that I really liked about the novel. Much like Tuesdays, the story itself is peppered with mini stories that help facilitate the telling of the main story. In this novel, Chick gives examples of "Times My Mother Stood Up for Me" and then, in contrast, "Times I Did Not Stand Up for My Mother." These are all examples of how mothers (parents) will do big and little things for the sake of their child, and the child... is at the time oblivious to this and is kind of a dick. Yes... I loved these stories so much, I'll go ahead and bump up my original grade. And I'll go ahead and give it an endorsement of "read it if you have time because it's good and it's short, so it won't be a time consumer."

Final Grade: B-

P.S. They apparently made a tv movie out of this. Oprah produced it I guess, but according to wikipedia, it got some bad reviews.

Only Downside to Living with Schutte...

We won't stop talking.

I get home. We chat. We hang. We get ready for bed. We chat. And lay in bed. We chat...

we chat some more...

I decide I'm a little hungry so I go eat a clementine...

I get back in bed...

we chat... some more...

We mention how we should really get some sleep...

and we chat some more...

I honestly don't know when/how we ever got to bed last night, but it happened eventually! :)

Other than losing a few z's, she's been a wonderful roommate and now that she's done with Boards... I'm interested to see what kind of shenanigans we'll get into (considering those we got into while she was SUPPOSED to be studying). :)

Summer 2006 with my current roomies

Current Tay Tay Song Obsession: Enchanted

It's adorable! She perfectly narrates how you feel when you first meet someone and are instantly infatuated by them. Only thing she could've done was add a verse about how you immediately go home and facebook/myspace/cyber-stalk him to find out everything about him. Anyway, unfortunately, half the time I sing the song in my head... this is the image that comes up.

Amy Adams is presh.

Taylor Swift Takes Over My Life

Again...

I've heard snippets of her new songs on the radio here and there, but I was just meh about it. I don't know why I try to fight her. I should know by now that she always wins. SHE ALWAYS WINS! Currently I'm in love with the song "Speak Now," not so much because it's about a girl pretty much being selfish and ruining a man and a woman's life right before getting married (or saving it, who knows, really? Taylor probably knows. At 20, she really does seem to know best...) but anyway... it's just damn catchy. Also, The song "Mine" follows the same kind of theme as Love Story. Well I mean, most pop songs are kind of the same thing, but she's got the whole bridge that turns into switching of the singer's character into that of the man professing their love for their girl... Okay, whatevs. Anyway...

Who wouldn't love a girl like Taylor?

Obvious Reason Why Thomas is Wonderful - #9

I never have to call Steven because of him.

This takes some explaining. Steven is a good friend of mine from high school. I can't really explain when he and I became friends. We've known each other since middle school. Vaguely, anyway. And then we started having Latin together in high school... but again, we never really talked outside of that. At some point after college started, he somehow became my go-to phone guy. And by that I mean, if I was having boy problems, he'd get the phone call. How did I even have his number? I literally have no idea how this came about. Anyway, I consider him a good friend to this day and he's still probably one of the only friends from high school that I keep in fairly regular contact with.

Anyway, he and I were on the phone the other night and at some point I said something along the lines of, "Can you believe I've been with Thomas for almost FOUR years now?" And he kind of snickered and eventually said, "That reminds me... you used to call me ALL THE TIME and cry about your boyfriend." And at first I thought he was talking about Thomas, but then he went and said some examples and they definitely had something to do with previous boyfriends. Then I said, "Wait, so when was the last time I called you with a boyfriend problem? I haven't done that in awhile!" And he replied, "Yeah... I guess it's been almost four years since I got one of THOSE phone calls."

And that made me smile. So... there you have it. Reason #9 why my boyfriend is the shiz.

[Also, big ups to Steven for putting up with me those other years. :) And... still putting up with my other stuff now. He and I commiserate about teaching life and options. He, too, is an aspiring teacher.]

Why This Morning's Walk Was Tough

Every morning I park in the faculty parking lot along Hart and I walk around the back to the school and up towards the choir room. Today, the walk was particular rough, because it was pretty frackin' cold and super duper windy. Here are 3 different reasons why the walk was more difficult than usual today:

1. My hair was wet. I take showers in the morning and I don't blow dry my hair--that's just how I roll. This + super wind = wet hair smacking me in the face.

2. I wore a dress, with tights, and a nice warm coat. This should sound like a good thing. This seems like I played my cards right--but no, all this meant was that my legs felt weird (bc of the tights) and I couldn't feel my dress on my own legs... so if the wind caught it and blew it up, I really wouldn't have known. Girls, you know what I'm talkin' about... right?

3. I stuffed my keys and iPhone in the right pocket... and had 3 clementines in the left pocket. So my fingers were literally stuffed inside my pocket. I had no other choice, it was that or frozen fingers!

Anyway, that's all. I wrote this entire blog in my head as I was walking up the school and decided to put it to... keyboard? Not paper. Wait, would it be website? Internets? Is pen to paper as keyboard is to internet? Or Website? Or Blog? Someone answer this for me please:

Pen : Paper :: Keyboard : _______?

Is Keyboard even the right version of Pen? Can someone seriously do this for me? It's bothering me now.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

[The first half of my review will not contain any spoilers. I will most likely begin to delve into the novel more in the second half, but I will put another spoiler alert warning before that.]

Grade: B+

Before I begin discussing the book, I first want to tell you a little bit about the writing style of this author. First of all, Kazuo Ishiguro is a he. I did not know this the entire time I read the book. He wrote narrating as a woman for the entire novel and I never thought twice that the author was a genuine female. He nailed it. All the catty things that girls do to each other when they're adolescent--perfect! Not so much catty maybe, but just... I can't put it any other way than girl-things. He understood that girls have a mutual understanding about certain things with each other. Just like that time Kathy and Ruth got in a fight about the chess game. But I'll get to that in a minute.

Okay, see what I just did there? I talked about something that none of you know about, and told you how it fits perfectly into what I'm trying to say, but I told you I'd tell you about it later. This is how this ENTIRE book goes. At first I hated it. It felt like one of those literary devices that we learned in 4th grade for the TAAS writing test. It's the equivalent of starting a paper with a question. "Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the chosen one to kill Voldemort? Well Harry Potter knows, and I'm going to tell you about Harry Potter in this paper." Just... lame-o. BUT--it grew on me. Mostly because, I let myself believe that this was less Kazuo Ishiguro's writing style (although after reading some reviews, I'm not so sure) and more Kathy H.'s narrating style. Real storytellers don't tell stories perfectly. Not when they're looking back on early events of their lives. I thought about myself and the incredible tangents I often go on. At least they break up the book into sections within the chapters--this really helps you to block off certain bits of time and remember that we're only discussing one facet of a particular story. So, that being said...

The story is narrated by Kathy H. It's set in the late 1990s. That's all you really get when you first open the book and start reading. She tells you stories of her life at Hailsham, the boarding school she and her friends attended until adulthood. At first it seems nothing more than a typical coming-of-age novel revolving around this boarding school and the kids that live there. I knew there had to be more to it, but couldn't put my finger on what I thought it was. It wasn't until somewhere between 75-100 pages that you start to realize that there's something funnnnky going on. Now, don't get me wrong, you kind of get the feeling that not everything's... kosher... early on, but like I said, you really can't put your finger on what the heck is so weird about this place. This has a lot to do with, again, either the writer's writing style or Kathy H.'s narrating style. The reader is slowly given more bits and pieces of information and the knowledge that you gain from this begins to make everything make a whole lot of more sense. It definitely fits the story for what it is. For this reason, I'm pretty curious to read Mr. Ishiguro's first novel, "The Remains of the Day," which looks like it was a pretty good one.

Anyway, this definitely is a type of coming-of-age novel, with a twist--I'll go ahead and say, a slightly science fiction twist, but don't let that lead you astray! No aliens or anything, but there's definitely a twist... unfortunately I kind of ruined it for myself. I was looking at the back of the title page (where it gives you the copyright and all that info) because I was wondering if they listed a suggested reading level for this book. I think I read something that seemed particularly racy, especially when you consider that before that part, the book had been fairly tame. Well my eyes floated across words that they listed as main themes of the novel. One word is a dead giveaway. I wish I hadn't read it, because, I think when I saw it, a light clicked in my head and I thought to myself, "Well duh, that's obvs," but it might not have been that obvs, because I think I was still sliiiightly surprised.

That being said, science fiction twist and all--it's amazing how much this novel still manages to seem so realistic. I could see the characters in my head. I could see them talking in a big field near a pond. I could see them huddled in a dark corner of a room trying to have a private conversation. Part of the reason this was probably so easy for me to see has a lot to do with the fact that this book has already been turned into a movie starring Carey Mulligan, Kiera Knightley and my recent crush, Andrew Garfield. Maybe that is why I love Tommy (Garfield's character in novel).

I initially intended on writing a separate section in which I could dive deeper into the novel and discuss key plot points, but I find that I am not wanting to do that now. I don't want someone who's 1% considering to read the book, reading what I write, and choosing not to because they feel the jig is up and there's no mystery to be solved. No, I'll just leave saying that I find that I did thoroughly enjoy this book. At some points it was a hard read, mostly because they talked slightly funny and I felt like I still didn't know what the HELL was going on... but overall, it meant something to me. I don't know if I know what yet, but I did feel something. And if I can't pinpoint what I feel now, does it matter? As long as it made me feel something to begin with?

I'm sorry if this review seemed like a whole lot of nothing. It's been awhile since I've written one of these (Umm, FEBRUARY?!?!?! HOW?!?!?!) How did I spend all summer not reading a book? Granted, I have re-read all the Harry Potters, but I'm not about to review THOSE. All it would be is me saying how awesome they were. Anyway... with the holidays approaching, I'm sure I'll be reading more often, my biggest reading months seem to be December, January, and February. (This is just from looking back at my blogs when when I was book blog-crazy). I am currently reading Jane Dunn's "Mary & Elizabeth" but I don't know if that's going to be something I read and write a review for. I may write some blogs here and there, but I think works of nonfiction are much more difficult to write reviews on. What am I going to talk about? I don't know, we'll see. I need to look for my copy of Mitch Albom's "For One More Day" or... something like that. I know I have it, but I can't seem to find it. I know I brought it on my last trip to Boston with Buddy... so maybe it's in a suitcase somewhere. Or worse, maybe it's stuck in the Comfort Inn... or... whatever hotel we stayed at :) I might start Sense & Sensibility. Or Dracula. Or any of the number of books I've bought and haven't read yet. Although... a part of me wants to go ahead and start Half Blood Prince again. After all, it was the first HP book I re-read (this was, of course before 7 came out) and that was in the summer of '07. I know you're all just sitting at the edge of your seats waiting to know what book I'll be talking about next. You'll just have to wait until I get home. Unfortunately I finished Never Let Me Go yesterday and didn't have the foresight to bring a second book! Le sigh...

Now... how do I get my hands on the movie?

Some Things Never Change...

So I was re-reading some old xanga posts (hells yeah) and came across this gem:
Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Can we please just give Gays rights, already? I mean honestly, the time and effort that the legislation puts into restricting their marital rights and whatnot would be so much more useful elsewhere. How about dealing with some education reform (we're having to deal with re-segregation here, people. COME ON!) Socio-economic status is the new issue at hand, the poor . And when CAN we stop with the affirmative action already? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it's just continuing this neverending cycle of "reverse subordination." Anyway, someone please read Loving v. Virginia and then tell me, that under the substantive due process ruling... the fact that "marriage is a liberty"... tell me why we're denying it to our citizens... simply because of sex of the person they choose to have intimate relationships with.

I get headaches when I leave government, even though I love it.

Posted 4/19/2006 6:34 PM

Ugh, I was a badass then, and I'm still a badass now. Also, Johnny. Here was his comment: "fuckers couldn't stop women's rights, and they couldn't stop black rights, and they won't stop gay rights. bigotry is dying becuz the rest of us are better than them, and they know it, and they're afraid.......o, and they won't stop mutant rights!! GO X-MEN!!"

It [Will] Get(s) Better!

P.S. - This was my 200th post!

ABC Family--You are Blowing My Mind!

So HP 7 is coming out. Naturally, whatever channel has the rights to show the movies is showing all of the movies they can. I think it's safe to say that I've watched the Goblet of Fire at least 100 times. This is not, by any means, an exaggeration, I have literally seen this movie many many MANY times. Often twice in the same day (usually back to back due to the DVD player just staying on).

Anyway, they're apparently playing the movie with extended scenes included. This is freaking me out because I know this movie almost exactly word-for-word and it's really throwing off my movie-watching mojo.

Anyway, 'tis all. I just wanted to bring that up. :)

BTW--Since I couldn't get an extra ticket for Schutte to come with us to see the midnight viewing of HP7, I got the hook-up from Stephen (What-what!? www.collegemoviereview.com, that's what!) and Schutte and I are going together to go see it on Monday night. AHHHHHH!!!!

Anthro Christmas = Happiness

It just makes me so happy. Check out their ornaments this year. Some are weird (like there's an odd rat of some sort, I think), but most of the others are super sweet!

Re-Headlining Internet Clips

So... I stumbled across a video today. It's pretty cool. It's of those human towers that those Spaniards just love doing (apparently only every other year).

The link that I saw it on was from a local news station from... who knows where. The title of the video that the news station gave it was "Amazing Human Towers Fall in Spain."

All I thought was, "Shouldn't this video be called, 'DUH!'?"

Schutte Moves In = Getting My Life In Order

Schutte moved in last night! :) I (with some help of Thomas) made her a banner that said "Welcome Home Schutte" and stuck her key under it. I bought a shelf for my bathroom so we'd have more counter space (and I cleared out the medicine cabinet, too) for her things.

I bought a bookshelf off craigslist. It was a little tricky (and it was a little bigger than I expected) but we got it back the apartment alright :) I made Thomas get in his trunk and lay down to make sure we had enough room in the car. :) We ran a bunch of errands together (oil change, drop by anthro to get my schedule, buy some fabric to cover the back of my bookcase, etc.) and it was a really fun and productive weekend. All thanks to Thomas's cleaning of the apartment about a week ago. Without that, I'd never have gotten inspired to do the rest! :) I even cleared out some boxes that have been sitting on my bedroom floor for-EVER. I'm super excited and happy with the developments.

Speaking of developments--today is a staff development/student holiday for AISD. Since I'm not technically a teacher just yet, I have the day off. I could run up to CPI and work there all day, but I haven't decided on that yet. I've worked super hard the last couple of weeks (averaging just over 60 hours a week) and think that I made enough to offset not working too much today. That's not to say I won't go in AT ALL, just... not for awhile. Maybe I should go to the gym? I can't say I don't have time? But... umm... yeah... whatevs.

I think I'm going to go to the asian supermarket to pick up some things (sorry Johnny, I see MAMA ramen noodles in my future), and we'll see where the rest of the day takes me. I gotta work at Anthro tonight. I at least have Wednesday off because I got a girl to cover my shift. We're gonna go see Paranormal Activity 2 on Wednesday. Schutte says she's terrified of scary movies, but maybe she'll change her mind? Maybe I can talk Maggie into coming too? *Wink*Wink*Nudge*Nudge* Maggie??? I know, I know, you hate them, but I figure I might as well keep asking until we finally go just in case you change your mind! :) I remember one time, when we were living together, it was near Halloween-ish time and I think I wanted to watch Scream on tv and you flat out refused to watch it with me downstairs and you ran upstairs to get away. Le sigh... :) Just think about it. We'll put you next to Johnny so he can protect you... or ridicule you. You never know.

Alright, good break, Mel. Back to laundry and other things around the house.

Moving on Up!

Dear God,

Thanks! :)

It's been quite a challenge and I'm still not there, but I think you're giving me baby steps, and I think I actually prefer it this way. Thanks for knowing what's best--or, at least, I hope you do! ;)

Love,
Mel

Did I just wink at God? Anyway, for some of you who do not already know, for the past two and a half weeks or so, I've been subbing for the choir at Murchison. Coincidentally, I've been subbing with Diana Brown, an old LHS classmate! It was kind of a trip when I realized that I was subbing FOR her one day, and then I've been subbing along with her (for the other choir director who just had a baby) ever since! I'm now officially the long-term sub here and I will be until at least January 31st! I'm at a great school and I'll be working with the age group that I hope to be working with full-time soon (hopefully)! Things are looking up and I am moving forward! :)

Now... how to make my blog private so those rascals don't go finding me on the interwebs...

This and That

This is going to be a pretty useless blog, as I'm not really going to say anything in it. Just a quick one to say:

That this Halloween was quite satisfactory.
That I love my family.
That I love my friends.
That I'm glad I don't have to tote around a container of salt and a parasol anymore.
That I'm glad I'm still at the top of my Fantasy College Pick 'Ems League.

More later. :)

Big [Book] Love

This is quite possibly the creepiest photo I could've ever found. My point, however, is that I love books. And in a (less creepy) way, I think they love me back. I just wish I could devote more time to them. Unfortunately the interwebs (e.g. this BLOG) is a time suck... although this blog is probably the best use of my time than 90% of the other time I spend on here (e.g., facebook, adding items to my anthro wishlist that are never purchased, and sometimes youtube). Anyway, this is how much I love books. I go to Half Price on a rainy day and buy 4 books (but they were only $24... so that means $6 per book!) ... and I'm currently reading 3 books at the same time.

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
2. Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens by Jane Dunn
3. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

This is Why I Love Clark

Clark Newman. He's such a brilliant man and I'm happy he's in my life (albeit via the interwebs). I just read this blog he had written a week ago and it just makes me love him even more.

Go ahead and just read his entire blog. Very inspiring.

Crushes :)

Okay. Remember when you kind of started to talk to your crush... and you would talk to their friends or (if this was after 2004) would facebook stalk them and find out their likes and then somehow they became yours? Not necessarily that you were lying about it, but you suddenly started listening to Def Leppard a hell of a lot more than you normally would've? Well, I feel like that's happening to me these days.

No. Not with a guy.

With a girl. :) Sorry Thomas. So, this might be a little weird for the person in which this blog is about, but whatevs, it's my blog. It'll be super awkward only because we were just discussing today about how you read my blog. :) Miss Aberdeen Sather. A fellow Anthrophile (and by that I mean someone who loves--or at least did before she worked there, haha--Anthro, and not someone who is attracted to humans... although that is still true), a fellow teacher (maybe not "fellow" yet, since I'm not technically one, but you know what I mean), a fellow Francophile, and a fellow lover of pretty things--I feel as though Aberdeen and I are kindred spirits. My particular crush on her started the day we opened at Anthro together and she had to vacuum and thus wore the Ghostbuster-like backpack vacuum. We chatted in-between her procrastination of vacuuming the front of the store. Not long after she stopped working at anthro (because she got a teaching gig) and when I found out on Facebook, I was devastated. I mean, happy for her, but devastated for me. You see, I'm not at Anthro all that often, so there are only a handful of girls that I saw on a fairly regular basis and therefor got to know and like and kind of be friends with... so it sucked losing one.

However, since she left Anthro, this forced us to actually hang out. We did not do this prior to her leaving, so obvsnodoy it all worked out for the best. We've gone out for drinks, to eat, to a movie... usually with another gal pal (the lovely Cathleen!) or Horacio, her manfriend who's also supes awesome. The point of this post is that I find myself being just ever so slightly more active than normal due to this budding friendship, and I like the way it makes me feel. It's kind of like the thrill of getting to know someone, except minus the sexual tension. :) Which makes it AWESOME!

Anyway so... I just went for a lengthy walk with Aberdeen and we just shot the shit the whole time. She and I seem to have the same goals we're focusing on (see most recent blog) and we talked about some of that and I had a great time. It's refreshing to talk to her. Anyway, 'tis all. I just wanted to share my newfound friendship and the positive effects it has on me.

She suggested doing one of those 5Ks with her and H sometime... we'll see just how persuasive she can be though... cause... well... yeah... :)

The gals at Aberdeen's Bday (she's the adorable blonde)

Here are some short term goals for the near future (in no particular order)

1. Read more. I was on a roll a while back reading constantly and now I've been so busy that I haven't really read much. For awhile I would bring a book to work when I sub. Unless I get a lame day with no real plans (which sometimes is acceptable) I never really have time to read much. I also used to read a lot when I worked out on the treadmill. Which brings me to my ext goal...

2. Ugh, the ever so popular GO TO THE GYM! I know, I've had a pretty good excuse to not go. My schedule has been work work work and then more work. But my weekends, though filled often with much needed rest, could still spare an hour at least to go to the gym. So stop being lazy.

3. Spend less. Make lunch. It's worked out okay with Murchison and the choir schedule being flexible enough that I can leave campus to grab something to eat, but I won't always be so lucky and I should save some money by planning my lunches ahead of time. Oh and get rid of the terrible lunch meat you bought a few weeks ago. FYI, Hillshire Farm (go meat!) should be Hillshire Farm (go throw it away). That wasn't clever at all but that's because I don't care enough for it to think of something better.

4. Sleep more. I know that when I hop into bed that whatever I do online after that is rarely of consequence. So... Unless I'm just putting on something to watch/fall asleep to, I am no longer allowed to play on the internets in bed prior to bedtime. We'll see how disciplined I am in keeping this rule. I already anticipate breaking it. Urban outfitters has free shipping until tomorrow! I must buy cheap wall hooks for Johnny's and my doorway.

Okay that is it for now... Blogs to look forward to: my recap or Emily's Halloween party, the Murchison choir concert, Inception at UT this week, hopefully a date with Aberdeen and Cathleen, Blake's Spooktacular Party, Wurstfest maybe? Does anyone want to go to that this year? I was sad when I thought we had missed it and instantly happy when I realized it's these next two weekends! :)

Okay, Nguyen, OUT!

Oh Eisley, You Truly Get Me

My blog should probably be dedicated or at least partially funded by Eisley--seeing as how I can't seem to stop talking (praising, gushing, whatever) about them. They just... get me. For almost every occasion in life, they probably have a song waiting for me.
"You'll never contemplate that I am near
And help goes unseen
You're the cave admitting who you choose
And I could be there for you"
--Eisley, "I Could Be There For You"
I cannot WAIT until they come to Texas. I still only have Houston tickets. Haven't decided about Austin & Dallas yet.

P.S. Sufjan delivered hardcore last night. How hardcore did he deliver? Let's just say, if Sufjan was an OBGYN, I was Octomom. Or like... Decamom. Hell, Dodecamom. I'll stop now, because... this could go on forever.

Sufjan Stevens and "Casimir Pulaski Day"

Dear Sufjan Stevens,

Please make me cry tonight. I'm hoping you will play my #1 favorite song--"Casimir Pulaski Day." According to Setlist.fm, it's one of your top three most played songs (along with my other two favorites--"John Wayne Gacy, Jr". and--duh--"Chicago"). Unfortunately, some setlists showed only "J.W.G.Jr." or only "Casimir Pulaski Day." Others had both in his encore. Please oh please oh please oh please oh PLEEEEEASE sing both tonight. Please oh PLEASE!!!!

"Casimir Pulaski Day." This song. This song is part one of my favorite playlists: Sophomore Songs, Track 8, sandwiched between Dashboard Confessional's "Hands Down" and Regina Spektor's "Fidelity." That year was a rather tumultuously emotional (emotionally tumultuous?) year for me. 2005-2006. Heartaches, new friends, loss of friends... For me, "Casimir Pulaski Day" represented Anne and her battle with leukemia. One of the quotes that I've always had in my "About Me" section on Facebook includes a line from this song, actually.
"All the glory when He took our place, but He took my shoulders and He shook my face and He takes and He takes and He takes..." -- Sufjan Stevens, "Casimir Pulaski Day"
It's a pretty song. It's a sad song, but a pretty song.

I'm going with LC tonight. LC is my Sufjan fellow fan. She's probably the one that introduced me to him. It was her birthday last week. She shares the same birthday as Anne. This was probably my first year not to cry on Anne's birthday. It's hard not to think about her though. LC's middle name is Anne, too. :) I was happy to get to celebrate LC's bday with her because it kind of makes me feel like I'm also getting to celebrate Anne's bday with her. Sorry Anne, if you don't like scary movies, cause that's how I celebrated your and LC's bday--watching Poltergeist.

Anyway, back to you, Sufjan... please please please, for the sake of me and the 2006 Mel who used your song to help heal a very very sad heart, PLEASE perform "Casimir Pulaski Day" tonight.

Love,
Mel

P.S. I really really really REALLY miss you, Anne.
P.P.S. Found this in an old Alcade that was online:

Amanda is Unbelievably Gorgeous. 'Nuff Said.

I Facebook stalked my own niece and stumbled across this photo of Amanda and her friends in Times Square from their NYC trip. She's gorgeous. And she's like... a real person. A real person who looks super gorgeous and goes out with her friends. Geez, Amanda, when you said you wanted cocktail dresses, I didn't know you meant fricken leggy cocktail dresses! :) I wouldn't have those! My legs aren't as long as yours!

Laugh It Up, Thomas

If you know me, or rather, if you know any of my brothers and sisters, you know that one of our pet peeves include STUPID QUESTIONS. (I can just imagine Chi Hong giggling as she reads this now!) Yes. We hate stupid questions. I know people (especially teachers) often say things like, "There's no such thing as a stupid question!" Guess what--THERE IS, and I will roll my eyes to make sure you realize that. :) It's rarely ever the issue that the question itself (or even the person asking) is "stupid." It's just (or at least, for me) that I don't like wasting time answering something that has either already been addressed or shouldn't even need to be addressed. Every now and then it's something obvious.

Even less common than that... I am guilty of the stupid question. Yesterday, Thomas got to enjoy the rarity of me asking him a question that he deemed ridiculous. I've been feeling slightly under the weather these past couple of days. I had some leftover dayquil/nyquil pills that I figured might help me get some relief. So I asked Thomas, "I think I'm gonna take one of those pills tonight. Is night the orange or the blue one?" He gave me this look that was so disapproving that I actually thought maybe he didn't approve of me taking the medication. Finally he just said, "BLUE. As in, NIGHT."

Laugh it up, Thomas Wilder. Laugh it up.

An Open Letter to Middle Schoolers of the World

Stop using the word "gay."

Unless of course you are using it in the sense of, "Hey, did you watch Glee last night when Kurt was having issues with being gay?" Or "Wow, those gay kids at Rain sure know how to party!"

Anyway, that is all. Sorry for the random post, I just heard it wayyyy too many times today.

Edit: It is also acceptable if you are having a nerdy Harry Potter conversation about Dumbledore being gay.

You Can Just Ignore This Post

I feel like I haven't written any substantial blogs lately.

This post will be no different.

I think the reason why I even thought about it was because I just read Maggie's blog and she mentioned that she hadn't blogged in awhile because she's been HAPPY! :) I think that's partially why I haven't blogged anything serious lately. Not that my life is sunshine and daisies (in fact in the past week or so I've had a couple severely low points)... but for the most part, I've been keeping myself busy and staying happy as well.

Here's a little picture that makes me happy to hopefully spread some cheer. I'm subbing tomorrow all day and if I have time, I'll see if I can write a lil somethin' :)

If this doesn't SCREAM college, I don't know what does!

West Side Story -- My Favorite Musical?

I love musicals Most people who know me know this fact about me. Some of my favorites include Wicked, Spamalot, Rent, and (reluctantly) Spring Awakening. One of my favorites of all-freaking-time is West Side Story. This is not only one of my favorites of all time, but it's also my first musical to ever see live.

I can't remember exactly everyone who was there, but I know it was with Katie & Jon and their friends (my guess would be the usual gang--Randy & Xiao). I was reluctant, because... even though I was in love with choir, musicals just wasn't my thing. But then we watched the free Miller Outdoor Theater show and it was SO FREAKING AMAZING.

It's coming to Houston & Austin this season. I'd actually super love to take Amber, Bella & Lina. I'd say Madison, but I'm just not sure if she'd be into that thing (not yet anyway). Amber and Bella would love the songs (I hope?) and Bella and Lina would see some super awesome dancing ! The dance at the gym is one of my favorite musical numbers EVER!

A picture of the dance at the gym when Maria & Tony meet!

Male dancing has never looked so good!

Such Colorful Dresses! Total Eye-Candy

Small World in World Geography

So I'm subbing for the social studies teacher I substituted for before at LASA. Today we're watching a video called "World in the Balance: The People Paradox."

Guess who is narrating it.

Oliver Platt.

Guess who he is.

Paul, The Childish Husband

See? The world wants me to obsess over The Big C more!

My New Show: The Big C

Cathy Jamison

My love for this show is vast. Yes, I have a vast love for this show. I stumbled upon it on our Showtime on Demand one day. The first time I ever even heard of the show was when I was in NYC with my sisters. I think we walked by an ad for it, but I had no idea what it was--I just knew that Laura Linney was in it. And I love Laura Linney. :) I saw the pilot episode on demand and figured I'd go ahead and watch it. It was one of those boerd-nothing-to-do-at-all days.

Within minutes of the movie starting, I thought it was the best thing on earth. Then you have a scene with her as a teacher. She is so flipping amazing. You can see the scene on youtube. Don't worry, it doesn't really ruin anything for you. You already know she's freakin' AWESOME.

Sean, Her Crazy Brother

I love love love love LOVE her brother Sean. He's freakin' batshit crazy, but I love him. I love him like anyone would love their brother/sister despite the fact that they're batshit crazy. Ugh, I just watched the last episode, the 7th episode. BEST. EPISODE. EVER! (So far...) Also, he's homeless, so LC--he's JUST your type!

Dr. Todd Miller, Her Doctor

This is her doctor. There are other pictures of him that actually show his face, but it's literally just his face (see here) and I thought that was a little awkward.

Adam, Her Punkass Son

I hate him, but I love him. Just like a mother would feel about her punkass kid. Apparently I think I'm Cathy. :)

There are other characters that are definitely worth meeting... but I'm bored with this post now. Just... if you haven't started watching this show yet, DO IT!

Apparently the Only Reason I Watch Movies...

Is to find new eye-candy.

Meet Andrew Garfield

Sorry Thomas. I can't tell if it was more the character of Eduardo Saverin or the actor himself (I'm thinking actor himself) that I'm toates into, but whatever it is... it's got my spidey senses tingling. That comment seems random if you don't know he's the next Spiderman. And if you didn't, well now you do. So there. :)

LASA Students Make Me Feel Inadequate

I'm subbing for another class at LASA today. I'm not 100% sure what class this is. It was listed as english, but the classes are Intro to Human... (-ities? I'm not sure because this is all that printed out) and AP Psychology (Who took psychology in high school???) Anyway, some of them are just reading their books. One girl was reading the Iliad. I asked her if she's reading it for fun or for Latin (I was about to Latin nerd all over her). She said she's reading it for English, it's one of their required readings that the entire 10th grade had to read. ENTIRE 10th GRADE! THE ILIAD! I asked her what else they had to read and she said The Odyssey and Metamorphoses. I've never. I mean, as a Latin nerd, I of course know the basics of these books... but I've never SAT DOWN AND READ THEM. The books we had to read Sophomore year were Fahrenheit 451 (which we read in 8th grade), Lord of the Flies (stupid conch shell!), Silas Marner (I think I liked that one), The Crucible... not necessarily BAD, but it wasn't exactly The Iliad, The Odyssey or Metamorphoses!

Obvious Reason Why Thomas is Wonderful - #8

He, like my brother-in-law Mike, is possessed by the art of the dance.

Tonight (that is, "last" night, the 2nd) we went out for his bday. He and I were joined with Johnny (duh), Jon, Katie, David, Trandy (kind of?) and Danielle! Towards the end of the night we lost a couple of folks, but gained my brother David and Val! This was at Barcelona. Where Thomas went NUTS on the dance floor. I mean nuts. I can't really give you examples, because I'm not sure the things he was doing have names... but believe you me, it was a sight to behold! Not only do I wish I had photos of him dancing (or better yet, video), but I really wish I had a photo of everyone's face when they had the "OMG, how/why is he STILL dancing like that?!" :)

Happy birthday to my dancing goober of a boyfriend!

Eisley Tour Dates Are FINALLY Released

I got an e-mail this morning from my beloved friend Buddy. It was a very simple message. A link to the popular Austin venue, The Parish--more specifically, THE EISLEY SHOW DATE!

It's November 24th. BOO! The day before Thanksgiving!?

BUT they have a couple more Texas dates...

24 Austin, TX The Parish
26 Houston, TX Warehouse Live Studio
27 Dallas, TX The Loft

Soooo... I just bought tickets for Houston... since I'll be there for Thanksgiving anyway (it's Friday night). I bought two... cause I'm sure I'll find SOMEONE to come with me (Thomas is obvs first dibs on my extra ticket, but I don't know if he'll be in Houston).

Is it bad that I kind of want to go to the Austin, Houston AND Dallas show!?

I, after all, LOOOOVE THEM.

My Two Favorite Shows Collide!

Two of my favorite shows have officially come together to make a hybrid. Okay not really. And frankly, I don't know how that would even come out/work out if that were even possible. Emily Deschanel of Bones and David Hornsby (better known as Rickety Cricket from Always Sunny) got hitched! I didn't even know they were together!

Aww, yay! Can't wait to see pics!

I bought this dress! It's been about a month since I saw it in our store (and literally gasped) and so I finally allowed myself to buy it. It's been my first purchase in like, 3 weeks! I think that's pretty good... I wanted to wait even longer, but my size was becoming extinct. So... I had to jump on it... okay anyway, moving on.

A small portion of me wants to take a photo of my bedroom so you can see the sheer madness that it has become. And everything is kind of in it's place, so I don't really know why it always gets like this, but it does. Maybe I just need a bigger room :) I need to put more things on walls. I need more shelves. I'm gonna craigslist that.

Anyway, I need to clean my room.

I wonder how many blogs I've posted about cleaning my room. (Just 2 others, just checked!)

I need to at least put things where they need to and then decide what to do with the remaining riffraff.

OH! I just got a job to sub tomorrow at LASA again! YAY! And for social studies again! :) Exciiiiited! I'll get to introduce myself to the teacher that I subbed for last time! Yay! (Oh and that teacher asked me to sub for him 3 other days).

Okay yay bye!

P.S. Will someone force Anh Vinh's family to START BLOGGING?!

Sartorially Stimulated and Inspired

Sometimes The Sartorialist posts photos and it does NOT interest me at all. Today however... today was heaven:

I WANT THIS DRESS!

Anyway, the other outfits posted are also adorable... I LOVE the orange dress... and all of the shoes--OH THE SHOES! But no... the one above takes the cake. A HUGE HUGE CAKE!

Titanic? Never heard of it.

I was reading an article about the Titanic (I told you my days and things I read are random) and it basically is an entire article about covered-up information that the surviving crew never admitted to because they did not want to tarnish other peoples' reputations. And then at the very end of the article it says this:

The RMS Titanic was the world's biggest passenger liner when it left Southampton, England, for New York on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Four days into the trip, the ship hit an iceberg and sank, taking more than 1,500 passengers with it.
Really? I mean I guess it's necessary if there's someone who doesn't know what the Titanic is, but... why are they reading this article then? Why do they care? Why not link to more Titanic info at the beginning of the article. Or start the article off with "Hey, this article is about the Titanic, you know, that super ship that never made it on its first trip ever?" But no. Instead they give you a tiny blurb at the verrrrry end of the article.

:)

The More I Sub, The More I Learn

Not because I'm learning what I'm teaching (if I'm even supposed to be teaching anything at all). Actually, it's because I'm often left having to find something to do, so I read. Today I read a book about the Louvre and I read about the British monarchs' family trees and I read about... that old Eliza program that everyone used to play on the macs in middle school.

Anyway, I naturally went back to the monarchs bc I'm obsessed with Victoria after watching Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria. I LOVED IT. I LOVED ALBERT. After I watched the movie I learned that something that happened in the movie didn't actually happen in real life. Usually I get annoyed with movies when they make up things to drive the relationship between the two main characters (especially if it's supposed to be a true story)... but in this instance I didn't mind at all. Mostly because it's so obvious already that Albert loves Victoria. They couldn't spend hours and hours and hours developing the plot even more to express how much they love each other, so I was okay with one little change. (I'm sure they changed much much more.)

Alright, time to go. Here's a pic bc I'm OBSESSED.

P.S. The guy who plays Prince Albert, Rupert Friend, apparently was the guy who played Wickham in the most recnet Pride & Prejudice (with Kiera). Thanks to Lost in Austen, I'm actually totally in love with the Wickham character and therefor do not mind at all :)

Eyes on Eisley

I just want to be their friend.

I've blogged about them before. I'm constantly going back to this band and re-discovering old songs, or discovering old songs that I simply ignored upon first listen. Most of their songs do need to grow on me. Anyway, their most recent song to take over my life is "Combinations" which is the title track of one of their newer cds. It's the friggen title track, how could I have ignored it?

Anyway, I guess I was so in love with the other songs on said cd ("I Could Be There for You" and "Taking Control") that I just yeah... ignored it. I was also obsessed with "Ambulance" from their recent EP. ANNNNNNYWAY. I finally heard "Combinations" and the harmonies and the words just suck you right in. Sherri's voice is amazing. Stacy's voice is amazing. I only wish I could heart Chauntelle's a lot more... oh well, you can't have it all. Anyway, after perusing the internets for a music video of Combinations (doesn't exist) I did find a cool random remix of the song. So, here's two versions: a live one and the funky re-re-remix!

"I went for so long
And I was so wrong
And then I met you
And now I can't live without you
And I don't want to
I've done that all my life up 'til now

All the time, darling now, oh
All the time, now we'll have to make it up
We'll make it up, oh
All the days, darling now, oh
All the days, now we'll have to make them up
We'll make them up somehow
We'll make them up"

Thomas, you can add this to the list. Eisley - "Combinations"

Some Things I Learned (or rather, had Confirmed) this Weekend

All the single (or married, whatever) ladies!

The Young Ones :)

- Motherhood is still a job primarily held by women. We need to get on this, my fellow feminists! Men, let's start applying for Motherhood!

- Cherries are more commonly dipped in chocolate than strawberries.

- The average 100 people surveyed for family feud often serve things at home such as sushi and caviar. If you're wanting some salad or pizza, however, you'd need to go out to eat for that because NOBODY eats that at home.

- My entire extended family is amazing.

- My immediate family (or rather, Anh Van, Anh Vien, Chi Thu, David & me) aren't as good at Family Feud as we thought we were. :) We brought some serious shame on us that night! Poor Chi Phuong-Anh! Had to be stuck with us! Whatever, she had fun! :)

- Probably the most important thing I learned (or rather, had confirmed) this weekend was that my Grandma was loved very very much by a very very giant family that only knows how to love and have lots and lots of fun!

Obvious Reason Why Lisa is Wonderful - #1*

She helps me make good decisions.

When I'm undecided, feeling overwhelmed, having doubts, or am just in need of a temporary life coach, she's usually there with really sound advice (whether I want to hear it or not--remember that time you talked me out of getting a dog? Thank GOD!)

*I guess the REAL obvious reason #1 might be the no-brainer "she's my sister," but we'll just say that it's SO obvious that it need not be said.

Grandma

My grandma passed away a few nights ago. I haven't said anything about it really because I'm kind of at a loss of things to say. My sisters have all written wonderful things (see here, here, and here) about her. I'm not saying I don't have wonderful things to say about my grandma, I just wish I had MORE wonderful things to say about my grandma.

My grandma is the only grandparent I ever knew. She's my mom's mom and I always thought she was cool. She lived by herself (BY HERSELF) in an apartment for the entire time I knew her (with the exception of the last couple years in which her kids hired some help). She baked. She baked these muffins with raisins in them. I remember not liking them all that much when I was really little, but I think it was just because there wasn't any icing on it, and come on, I needed icing, not raisins. As I grew up, however, I LOOOOVED those muffins. But the best is her Banh Choux (I had to google it just now to make sure I was spelling it right and OMG my mouth watered as soon as the google images popped up). I remember always being the first ones over to her apartment for family functions and having to help fill the banh choux. I remember Katie and I used to say how much we wanted to spend a summer taking baking lessons with grandma. We never did do that.

My grandma also knitted. One year she knitted her granddaughters (did she do it for all of us? I guess so? That's a looooooooot of knitting) blankets. She asked us for two colors that we would like. Katie had just learned about complementary colors and had just told me about them shortly before this. Katie always liked the color purple, I think, so she went with purple and yellow. I think even back then I liked the color green, but I definitely didn't want green and red (Christmas, much?) so I opted for pink and light green. It actually ended up matching the pink and green Minnie Mouse bed sheets that I had forever. I looooove that blanket. It keeps me very very warm on cold nights (as few and far between as they can be in Texas).

One thing I always thought was funny about grandma was how I was pretty sure her English was better than my mom's. That was just the more independent side of her, I guess. She was up and about around town and she needed to know English, so she made sure she knew it.

Sometimes my parents would go to these all-day parties with their friends (my dad's old alumni parties, if you will). If my brother and his wife and kids weren't available to babysit me (and I use that term loosely, as at this point I was easily 13 or 14), sometimes I'd end up at grandma's. This prospect was always terrifying to me. Mostly because this was in the height of my internet usage days. With no internet, I at least wanted to be on the phone, but I felt guilty tying up my grandma's phone line since she didn't have call waiting. I remember one time in particular I felt like this had to be the most boring day of my life. Then grandma pulled out some movies out of nowhere and asked me if I wanted to watch any of them. One of the movies she had was one of my favorite movies--Ever After. So that afternoon I spent the time watching the movie with grandma while she knitted. I remember thinking she was so cool to have this movie.

If I have any regrets when it comes to my grandma, I guess I regret not talking to her more. I guess when there's approximately 70 years and a language barrier, you don't really know what to talk about. Not the best excuse in the world, but it doesn't mean it's not the truth. I do remember thinking she had to pretty cool because she used to ask me if I had a boyfriend wayyyyy before my parents even allowed me to openly speak to boys on the phone. :)

Some of my best childhood memories involve playing hide and seek with my cousins in her bedroom. Her apartment used to seem so huge to me. How did 8 of us hide in that one room? We used to turn off the lights and play weird hiding/fighting games too. We used to play pretend or act out stories that Lilly told us. We used to tell ghost stories in her room. We STILL gamble in her room. Or rather, we gambled in her room this past Tet. Will we ever go back there ever again? I've been going there for 24 years. Still, the whole point of this is that my BEST--BEST, as in of ALL TIME--memories are all family related. With all 8 of my brothers and sisters. With all 30 or so of us first cousins. With all of my aunts and uncles. Our family matriarch, my grandma, Pham Bich Hue, is the one who, without her, none of that could ever have been possible. That, in itself, makes for a GREAT woman.

I haven't cried all that much since getting the news. I cried initially, I cried a bit more randomly that day, but since then, I haven't really cried. I think it helped that Lisa and I drove down to Houston one night a couple of weeks ago to see her. She managed to open her eyes and smile at us a few times. She tried to say something, but I don't think any of us could've made out what it was she was saying. What helps the most, however, is that my mom seems okay. She knows that grandma is with God and she is on longer suffering. She also had a very long and happy life filled with lots of love.

We'll miss you grandma, but say hi to grandpa for me!

P.S. She was born on St. Patrick's Day! GREEN! :)

P.P.S. I just saw how much I wrote. Didn't mean to write that much. Sorry, bad habit of mine.

Rachel ACE-vedo

Rachel & Me on the day we all rode our crazy bikes! :)

Rachel Acevedo is pretty much coolest girl I know. I'm pretty sure I've already blogged sometime before about how awesome she is (see here, here, and here). She just wrote a blog (and made a slideshow) about the gang. So... that just makes her even MORE awesome. :)

Here's the link to her post!

She'll be having another Birthdance party this year. I CAN'T WAIT!

I Hope I See More Green

Life has become a juggling act. I've gotten more and more subbing opportunities (which has been great) but it still doesn't pay all that well, so I've been making sure to get extra hours in at CPI. This means some days I'm working from about 7:30 am - 7:30 pm. But the prospect of teaching is just so invigorating that I don't seem to mind. I'm so excited throughout my days that I'm not even really hungry for lunch (whaaaat?!) If you ever take a gander at my iCal, your eyelids will probably start drooping before you can even figure out what each color stands for. I'm still not even sure what my distinctions between green (Life), yellow (Special Occasions), and gray (Errands) are. Why do I even need three separate colors for these things? When are special occasions and errands not a part of my life? Whatever. It somehow makes sense in my head.

When I make a really good tight schedule, I'm usually pretty good at keeping track of it. Especially if it's something I want to keep track of. :) Hopefully life with slow down a bit and maybe there will be less gray, more yellow, and definitely more orange (school!) But what's really important is green. Here's to lots of green! (Life, that is!)

Modification of Teaching Plan

Get HQ for high school social studies.

I love government and I love history. Like, LOVE. I love the civil rights movement from the 50s and how it's so relevant today. I HATE that there are people in the world (US, more specifically--FLORIDA, I'm looking at YOU) that the burning of a sacred book of text, the Quran, is ok. I won't go on a tangent, because believe me, I can GO. But let's just say that the burning of the Quran will not HELP international relations and definitely will open wounds that have taken Muslims (especially American Muslims) years to heal after 9/11. I hope anyone who reads this agrees with me. Mostly because anyone who reads this is supposed to either be my friend or family member. Disagreements about an issue such as this though makes it pretty cut and dry to me whether or not I need to be associated with you. :)

Okay, back to my original reason for this post.

I'm subbing for a social studies teacher at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy here in Austin. These kids seem AWESOME. They're pretty well-behaved, but most importantly, they seem to WANT to learn. I LOVE THIS! I WANT THEM! FOR ME! I need to figure out a way to infiltrate this school.

A Bunch Of Winners!

Kid: What's your name again?
Me: Ms. Nguyen, like, "All I Do Is Win!"
3 Girls Singing: All I do is win win win no matter what!

I can't say I wasn't hoping for the response!

Well alright! It's okay!

One of my favorite songs right now has one of the cuuuutest music videos in the world. I think it's mostly because I have a huuuuuge girl crush on Zooey Deschanel (remember my girl crush on her sister Emily?)

Anyway, it's for She & Him's song "In the Sun"

Enjoy! :)

During a heart to heart with Thomas one night, my dad told Thomas that everytime the house phone rings, it scares him. He assumes that it's a bad phone call--something bad happened to one of his kids (or grandkids). I understood the feeling, after all, there's so many people in our family, it wouldn't be completely unlikely.

My mom just called me. Basically telling me that she already spoke to Lisa and wants us to not come home this weekend to visit grandma, but to wait until the next weekend, since we'll be coming home anyway for Labor Day & Amanda. I have to say though, when I saw that I was receiving a phone call from "Home," I had to take a deep breath (and hold it) before picking up the phone. I was terrified of it being bad news. It sounds like that news may be coming soon though :(

It's weird. I don't think grandma has known who I am (she actually kept thinking I was my sister Rachel for a little while) for at least a year or so now. It makes me sad, but I mean, she's 93. With a shit ton of grandkids. I can't expect her to remember us all when she has a hard time recognizing her own children.

Anyway, if you have any extra time. Just a short little prayer for my grandma would be nice :)

Is Over-use a Form of Neglect?

Dear Life (and my Sanity),

I'm sorry I've neglected you. Actually, I haven't really neglected you, I've actually been keeping you pretty busy. But I haven't really given you time for yourself, so for that, I am sorry for the neglect. Things are going insane. But I think you're actually happy about all of this (especially now with Thomas gone, I know you like staying busy). Just a couple of notes:

I know you want to get in as many hours as possible, but maybe a day or two at the gym won't hurt? I know you want to get everything at Anthropologie but... umm, how about don't? :) I know you DON'T want to clean your room, but how about stop the procrastinating on here and actually just go in there and do it? Can you believe it? I'm 24 and I still HATE cleaning my room.

Anyway, just go do a load of laundry, put something on tv, plan out how you want your room to be (I see a coffee table leaving my room and a dresser leaving my closet to join my room), and try to be in bed by... 11? Is that too ambitious?

Yes, it is too ambitious. Because I just sat here writing this as Johnny gathered up HIS items for laundry. So... I'll PLAN for laundry to be done? ;) Later...?

New York in a [Camera] Flash!

I'm hoping that I can keep the memory of things we did via my photos I took while in NYC. I knew this would happen, which was why I tried to write as much as possible right away. But alas, the inevitable happened. I don't have it in me to write a full blog on NYC. We just did too much and task of writing it all out seems daunting.

Here's the gist of our trip:

Lisa & Chi Thu treated me to some pretty sweet fooding. It was awesome. Lots of walking, but way worth it--especially the Brooklyn Bridge. It was great getting to hang out with my sisters for a vacay. I'd do it all over again (this time we'd all get drunk instead of just Lisa :P)!

You Can't Always Get What You Want...

But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need!

For awhile, I was feeling a little down in the dumps. I try to have a bright outlook on life. I've told myself countless times that no matter what happens, things could always be worse and eventually, things will work out and be just fine. At the risk of sounding at all preachy, God won't ever give me something I can't handle.

But I threw myself a private pity party anyway. Room for just one. It didn't last too long, but it definitely happened for a short bit of time. I mean, to be honest, I just felt like I've tried (and I feel like I still am trying) very hard to help out my friends in need. I don't know how many of my friends I've been able to help find jobs when they were a little strapped for cash. Granted, it wasn't exactly their dream job, but it was a job that paid money that they weren't otherwise being paid. I've tried to be a good person who tries to be positive and think positively. But for a little while, it was kind of feeling like a one way street. I felt like Demi Moore's character at the beginning of G.I. Jane when she didn't want to use the step to get over the wall. Like I was there at the bottom helping everyone get over that hump of so-called shitty early 20s life. But then.. it felt like everyone else was getting there, and I was still stuck at the bottom. And y'all know me, my upper body strength is terrible. I just can't seem to get over the wall. And I feel like I've already helped everyone else over. So now I'm alone on this super shitty side of the wall.

So that was what the pity party was all about. But I think I've found my silver lining and have thus felt a lot better about it. I have 4 jobs. You read right. As of yesterday, I officially have 4 jobs. Part time at CPI, Leaps N Bounds, Anthropologie and I am now officially a substitute teacher for AISD. All I want is that teaching job, but it seems I got to jump through some hoops to get there. I'm okay with that. Anyway so working 4 jobs doesn't sound like much of a silver lining, does it? Well, it's not really. BUT, I've worked it out so that I'm able to still make enough money to survive, all while being able to work out a system in which my employers allow me to call in and not come in when I know I'm going to be subbing.

I've convinced that this would not be the case had I not been a great employee. I mean, who just lets someone make up their own hours and pretty much come and go as they please? Not a lot of places do (or if it is a lot, then don't tell me, because I'm feeling slightly special--so don't ruin it). So anyway, I attribute my good fortune of jobbage (despite the fact that I'm working a ton a week) to me being a good person that other people (i.e., my former/current employers) want to help out with some flexibility.

Also, at both CPI and Leaps, I'm getting paid more than I expected them to pay me, so that's always a plus.

So, aside from my earlier post of having Johnny as a great friend who's offered to help me in my hour of need--which hopefully won't be necessary with 4frickenjobs--(Thomas goes without saying, though his help is much more emotional seeing as how he's still in school), there's my silver lining. I will try to not doubt it's existence ever again.

From White House to White Dress

So I opened up Yahoo! and one of the front articles for today is about Chelsea Clinton and the little blurb with the thumbnail says "Chelsea Clinton's path to wedding" and then when you hover over it, the bigger photo comes up with another headline: "Chelsea: From W.H. to wedding bells" Took me a sec to realize what W.H. stood for (I think I was slightly confused because I was thinking presidents, and then George W. and George H. and W.H. and whatevs, anyway)... I finally realized it stood for White House, and was annoyed that they didn't go for the much more clever title of "From White House to White Dress." Maybe "white dress" doesn't translate to wedding enough for average yahoo readers? But it's less stupid than "W. H. to wedding bells."

Well, in my opinion anyway...

Summer in [New York] City... Part 1

Regina Spektor said "Summer in the city means cleavage, cleavage, cleavage..." but for me, I think it was more "hot, humid, and sweaty." Actually, that was just the first day. :) The rest of the weekend (ESPECIALLY Sunday night) felt awesome.

This was my first big trip with any siblings since I was... 17? 7 years ago? Katie, Jon and I went to San Diego to visit Chi Tram, and then we all went to Vegas for a night. I was 17. In Vegas. Needless to say, Vegas wasn't that awesome. Not because it's not awesome, but because it has nothing to offer a 17 year old.

But New York City had plenty to offer this 24 year old. :) Lisa and I finally got to our hotel after the world's hottest cab ride (well, at that point, we THOUGHT it was the hottest cab ride). We knew when we were walking inside the... uhh... whatever the walkway that connects the plane to the gate is called... we knew when we were walking in __________ (name?) that it was going to be hot as HELL. According to my iphone it was about 5 degrees hotter than Austin. 5 Degrees! What?? Anyway, we get to our hotel after driving through Times Square (we stayed at the Times Square Westin). We walk into our hotel room and blasted the air. We also closed our curtains after our very disappointing view (we were right behind a billboard--suck). But, the beds looked cleaned and so did the rest of the room (and hey, at least we HAD windows--yeah, I'm looking at you New Orleans Pelham Hotel... I'm lookin' at you!) Then we set out. We made our way to the Time Warner Building/Mall what-have-you in Columbus Circle to eat at the Bouchon Bakery. On the way (with some strategic detours) we saw more Times Square, Rockefeller, Anthro (love love love), David Letterman (well, not HIM), and more Broadway theaters. I had a turkey pressed sandwich that was AWESOME! Lisa had the world's fluffiest, lightest, airy quiche.

Then we made our way down to the subway to head downtown towards some shops. We stopped inside The Strand Bookstore & ABC Home (zomg so beautiful). We walked and hung out in Washington Square for a little while (my feetsies needed some rest) and then headed down to Pearl Oyster Bar. Of all my meals in NYC this weekend, this was probably one of my faves. It was $11 Mussels in a wine, mustard and some kind of cream sauce. I expected a good portion (a good portion being about... 10-15 mussels). I EASILY got over 30 mussels. IT WAS SO GOOD! I couldn't believe it was only $11. The place was pretty small and tiny (reminded me much of the place LC and I got crepes at in the Montmartre area), but it was cozy and full of people (and life). Lisa had Bouillabaisse which was filled with about 1,000 different types of seafood/shellfish (aka Johnny's ultimate death). We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and then we headed out towards Magnolia Bakery (in a very roundabout way--but the cool thing is that we walked by the Jefferson Market Garden! This means nothing to most people, except austin SATC fans like us who thought, "That looks like the garden that Steve and Miranda didn't hate and got married in" and one short google later I found out--IT WAS!) Magnolia was adorable. I was too stuffed that night (and the next?) to eat my cupcake, but I did two days later and guess what--STILL EFFIN' GOOD.

Lisa and I ended up back in the hotel room and waited for Chi Thu to get in. She finally did, told us about the kid who asked his parents "Are we sleeping in trash?" and kept saying she wasn't hungry. She was. But somehow we fell asleep without her ever admitting she wanted to get something to eat.

And that, my friends, is all I can muster for my first day recap :)

Sweet NYC
