"What Does This Button Do?"

In Singers, when you're a NUGI, on your first day... you fill out a form with stupid questions. I don't remember all of them, but some examples are "African Swallow or European Swallow?" "What does NUGI stand for?" (which gets AWESOME responses), and then there's one that could be a fairly boring question: "What do you want your last words to be?"

One of my favorite answers that anyone has ever given was Scott Thurston's of "What does this button do?" So clever. He was my NUGI, so of course I'd have thought so even if it wasn't. We were Team THIS.

Anyway, when I got back to Austin on Sunday, I was sitting in my apartment alone (Johnny wouldn't be back from Arlington until the next day) and I heard this awful sound. I thought it was the water pipes from the neighbors above... but it continued and it sounded so muffled and close at the same time... so I decided to investigate. I thought it was my dryer, but the sound didn't seem to be coming from there. I thought it sounded higher up so I stared at the ceiling, and eventually followed the sound to my fridge. Or rather, my freezer. My icemaker was making this ungodly buzzing sound.

I tried moving the little wire thingy around, maybe turning off the freezer will help, I thought. But no, it was relentless. Eventually, it stopped and I dubbed myself a genius--not really knowing what I did. Then it started again, and this time it came back with a vengeance! I called Buddy and he told me to try messing with the wire thingy, and when that still didn't seem to work, he suggested I just unplug it and then plug it back in. The plug, of course, is in the very back of the fridge. We eventually got off the phone.

I stared at my icemaker. There was something going on in there and I was going to figure it out. There looked like a black spot... a black lever? A black button? There was something in the very back of the icemaker and I was going to touch it. So I did. I'm not sure if it shocked me, if nothing happened but I psyched myself out, or what the hell happened, but... as soon as I touched it, my arm shot back at me, hitting the wire and snapping it on my hand and I just stood there. I got fed up, climbed on the counter, squirmed my arm behind the fridge and unplugged it. I immediately plugged it back in and it started buzzing. I unplugged it, waited a minute, then plugged it back in. Since then, I've only heard spurts of buzzing...

This morning I was thinking about it again and I realized... my last words could've been "What does this button do?"

+ 22.5 (v. bad, but good considering 2 bowls of ramen...)

Fat Fatty McFatFat

The thing I hate about blogging is that I feel obligated to blog about certain events, even though it's actually overwhelming to blog about it, and then I end up avoiding it, and avoiding the blog all together.

Well, it's my blog, and I'll do what I want to.

So, as far as the roadtrip goes (my photos and status updates on facebook would agree), it was kickass and I had a really great time with the Carl... and Thomas... and Buddy. :)

Anyway, on to why I'm writing this: I just stepped on the scale after not having done so in weeks (if not months). I am my [new, more realistic] ideal weight + 23 lbs. yes. 23 lbs.

28 lbs ago, I was hanging out in Paris.

So. End of the year/New year's resolution: Stop being so fat. I think Bridget Jones has also slightly inspired me. She puts her weight before every entry. Scary. But I'll do it. Maybe it'll inspire me. Except instead of the weight, I'm just gonna put + (or -... haha being hopeful). Thankfully, I'm not as bad as Bridget with the vices. Don't have to worry so much about cigarettes and alcohol. Ramen, on the other hand... I'll probably have to count those.

So today...

+ 23 lbs (v. bad)

I Can't Eat ANYTHING I want!

This was the week to have closed restaurants.

Last Saturday - wanted to go eat at Bite Mi.  They were closed.
Monday - wanted to go eat at 24 Diner, but it was closed due to unexpected shortage in food.
Saturday - wanted to go eat at Bite Mi, but saw on Johnny's Bite Mi menu that this time that they're just apparently not open on Saturdays.
Sunday - went to church with Thomas... afterwards, we walked by Bite Mi, and saw that they're apparently closed until January 15th.  So sad... then we went down Lamar, and I thought, okay, I can do La Madeleine... guess what, closed.  Not just closed, but... like... it looks like it's been looted.  Then I finally say, FINE--Banzai!  Oh--closed!  O-M-G!

Johnny's birthday was great.  Up until the end of the night when Thomas was a terrible drunk--but what can you do.  He made up for it for being perfect the rest of the weekend :)  Our Christmas party was also great, and no major spills!  (However, I do keep smelling salad dressing all over my apartment--at least it's Olive Garden!)  Mr. Matt showed up--which really was a great surprise!  I almost felt like crying, but I think it was mostly because he was dressed as Santa and I felt myself believe in Christmas miracles again.  :)

Anyway, today Thomas and I went over to Lisa & Mike's and we watched Julie & Julia.  I liked it!  I love Meryl so, it was good :)

Now I have to gear up for our road trip.  I'm nerv-nerv.  I need to pack lightly, I haven't started and unfortunately I can't just throw shit together like I always do!  Wish me luck on that front! :)

And now..

I breathe a sigh of relief.

I realize I'm probably PMSing

Me & Shanna, the first time we got to see the Eiffel Tower

So, like the title says, I realize this... and this explains why my brain is everywhere and I'm in a huge mood to reminisce and feel sorry for myself. I was just re-reading old wall-to-walls that Shanna and I had and it really makes me miss our summer together. Through laughter, tears, and some regrets, she shared some of my most memorable moments in Paris. I can't wait to go back!

It really does make me really SAD to re-read some of my stuff from Europe--mostly because it makes me feel like I'm not doing anything worthwhile. But I know that somehow I must be... so I'm okay with the way things are right now. :) I have food to eat, a place to call a home, a family that loves me, friends that make me laugh (and hopefully love me too), and... really awesome pictures to help me relive better days... haha. No, but really. Just so Thomas doesn't text me again and ask me what's wrong... there is NOTHING wrong. I'm just in the mood to cry, be dramatic, and be emotional.

Off to read now! Or sleep. If I don't sleep right away I'll hate myself in the morning. That happens normally anyway, so I'm sure I'll be fine!

What I hope to see the next time I wake up from a nap...

Shrinkage

I'm an idiot.

A dress I absolutely love has been destroyed because I forgot it was being washed... And I dried it. It might fit my 7 year old niece, if she didn't HATE dresses!!!!

Warm and Fuzzies!

Last week was a good week. Mostly because it was a short work week filled with family at the end.

Thanksgiving was good, and it marked the beginning of the warm and fuzzies. That feeling you get around the holidays where you feel like you can save the world one Christmas present at a time. Hanging out with my family was AWESOME, and we played Family Feud (girls won, boys suck.) I hung out with Chi Thu a lot watching Always Sunny. I also hung out with Anh Vinh's kids a lot, which was fun. Connect Four and Guesstures!

It's getting cold in Austin and I don't really know how to handle it. I just want to curl up in bed and watch a sad movie and cry. And read. I've been finding all these books and I keep buying them and unfortunately, I have no time to read them. NO TIME! THERE'S NEVER ANY TIME! I need Caffeine pills like Jessie... to read recreationally.

Luke is giant and awesome.

Johnny and Buddy both had really important days yesterday (Wednesday), so naturally they both got really drunk off of wine the night before at the Wine-oisseur party. We also talked about family--mainly Johnny's. It's the most any of us had ever heard Johnny verbalize about his family outside of blogs.

Johnny got his car broken into. So, fun. He quickly smuggled our tv into the apartment so as not to raise suspicion in our complex that our apartment should be broken into.

Oh! We went and ate at Hot-Boiled last week! And then this week some of us went to Alamo Drafthouse for TMNT & Pizza! I know I've seen TMNT before, but seeing as how I was very young, I didn't remember a thing from it. It was surprisingly HILARIOUS. :) I don't know if it was hilarious because it was hilarious, or hilarious because it was bad, I think it was mixture of both. It was awesome, either way. :)

I found A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila at Half Price Books for 5 bucks. I had to justify to the guy who was checking me out that it was a guilty pleasure, and I supplemented my purchase with other books to make me look intelligent like old awesome looking copies of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

This post is very ADD--much like my reading these days. I'm re-reading Chamber of Secrets--my least favorite of the entire 7 book series, so I'm not exactly enthralled. I'm reading Naked by David Sedaris, and as I had just finally finished When You Are Engulfed in Flames a month or so ago, I wasn't exactly dying to rip through this one--especially since it's all short stories and you can stop at any time. I also just started Tuesdays with Morrie, a book that I've been meaning to read forever, but never thought about it cause I felt I never had time. Well now I'm starting, and I still don't have that much time, but it's what makes me feel happy and accomplished--so it's what I'll do.

We adopted a family! Single mom and a 4 year old son named Ashton. We are buying the SHIT out of their Christmas wishlist. We are SO EXCITED!

Christmas party @ Me & Johnny's for the regs. More fun!

Also, eventually we will be having a dinner at THE BELMONT, cause that's what we do when our friends get into grad school! And THOMAS got into BAYLOR for his MBA!

Doppelgangers UNITE: The Legendary Tale of Rachel Acevedo's Greatness

November must be the month for doppelgangers. Ever since Kate Stafford joined our office and I started calling her Hannah's doppelganger, there have been TONS of sightings. This weekend, in C. Stat, we saw TONS of Mr. Matts and Buddy Burkhalters. We saw an Arlie and, as Johnny put it, "Patrick's old roommate Mike." These doppelgangers (mostly Mike's and Arlie's) were dead on... while Mr. Matt's and Buddy's... were just white guys.

Rachel's 22nd Birth-Dance Day (But Night) Party gave Johnny and me our very own doppelgangers (as unlikely as we thought it would be to find them)! I had three. I believe at one point, Johnny turned to me and said, "Y'all are like the cardinal directions--EVERY WAY I TURN, YOU'RE THERE!" Johnny's finally showed up at the end of the night and there were FOUR of them! I had one of those "Yes, I'm Vietnamese."/"What?! No way!" conversations with one of them. Johnny kept saying I looked Mexican.

[I'm listening to *N Sync's "Home for Christmas" album, and... keep getting distracted, so if my blog post seems disjointed, I apologize.]

Buddy and Johnny rode together there while I drove behind them and sang to my ipod (I bought a new fm transmitter w/ charger, so life was good that night). It was raining like a bitch at some points, so I did a lot of focusing on Buddy's taillights. That was fun :) We met Rachel at our hotel and she checked us in. She is so amazing... she gave us our party favors--T SHIRTS! I'll have to get some photos up of them.

The three of us spent most of the night dancing. Lots and lots of dancing. I think I burned about a gazillion calories doing the dancing we did. Rachel would come up to us on occasion and ask us if we were "having an okay time" to which all three of us would insist that we were having a GREAT time. I don't think she believed us. I'm not sure why she wouldn't. She also wrote on all our walls thanking us for coming, and apologizing for not being a good enough hostess--this statement alone is absurd, considering the fact that, had she NOT been as good a hostess as she actually was, the three of us would be sleeping in our cars in the cold, cold rain. Not only did she rent out a place, play her own awesome music (which on occasion, we had to Shazam... we didn't have Carl there to tell us what song it was... and we're old), AND get us said hotel room... she also got a mariachi band to sing happy birthday to her. WTF!

I just hope that Rachel had as good a time on her night as the rest of us did :) If her dance with her friend Jacob was any indication, I'd say she did! At one point, I turned around and her friend Jacob was right next to me and I said something along the lines of, "YOU! YOU are the one that's in all of Rachel's videos these days and I'm so jealous! I'm happy she found some great friends here though!" Hmm, thinking back, that was just about the cheesiest thing I could've possibly said. Oh well. Despite the fact that I am dreadfully jealous of all her friends in College Station that get to see her all the time, I am so happy for her! And hey--at least she found our doppelgangers!

Oh, we took all the candy though, so... suck on that doppelgangers! :)

College Station Anticipation!

Never in my life have I been excited to go to College Station. When I went to go see my cousin, I was excited to get to go see her, it had nothing itself to do with being in CS. This weekend, a friend of ours, Rachel, is having a huge birthday blowout in CS, and I'm actually kind of excited. 1. You know the music will be awesome, cause she's in charge of it, and 2. It'll be interesting and fun to meet all of her new friends! And to see how the CS kids do it. :)

Johnny and I discussed how amazing she is and basically decided that this party is going to be just like those Super Sweet 16 parties... except the birthday girl is turning 22 and she's a badass. She even sent out a message to get a proper headcount so she can make sure to have PARTY FAVORS for everybody! WHO IS SHE?! Not to mention that she got a hotel room for me, Buddy & Johnny... she's cray cray... but I LOVE her. So, that's what we're doing Friday night :) This is gonna be the best Friday night CS has seen in a long time! I can just feel it!

The next morning we'll probably head back to Austin pretty early, since Buddy is heading to Conroe for a wedding. My nephew will be playing a baseball tournament in Round Rock so maybe I'll hit that up?

I foresee many pictures from this weekend. Stay tuned! :)

P.S. Did I mention that RACHEL IS AWESOME?!

Knuckle Puck/Singers-filled Weekend

Friday:

Thomas had an interview at Baylor on Friday. He thinks it went fairly well so I hope everyone is sending him happy thoughts! Then he came up to work and ran some errands and then we ended up at my place, with some F3 and watched some "Bored to Death." We took a short nap, woke up, and watched some MORE "Bored to Death" until Mr. came. Then we watched more "Bored to Death." Ironically, we were not bored to death. I think it was Thomas and Mr.'s first time to ever watch it, and I think they liked it, so... yay!

Finally, we got the text from Sarah that let us know they had arrived at the Austin Karaoke! It was so fun! WHY we've all been obsessed with karaoke lately is beyond me, but I'm not complaining! Attendees were: Sarah, Tony, Jack, Cale, two of their friends who's names unfortunately escape me, Thomas, Johnny, Mr., Buddy, Maggie, Chris Cable, and... I'm pretty sure that's it. Anyway, I somehow found a way to search the songs by artist and not just by title (completely by accident) and we found a shit-ton of more songs! PITUSA was a great hit. :)

Afterwards we did the usual Whataburger. Despite my many attempts, no missed connections were made.

Saturday:

This was a great day! Stephen's site, collegemoviereview.com was hosting an AMAZING RACE event! There were really only 4 teams, and... let's face it, Team AWESOME (me and LC) and Team Almost As Good As Team AWESOME (Buddy, Johnny & Mr.) were really the only two teams worthy of being in the race. LC's driving was terrifying, but it made a difference in the end. There were 2 bad things about the race. 1, LC and I left my iphone in the car when we should've taken it with us. 2, I had to run--boo! It was literally a race to the finish line (i.e., Stephen). Technically, Johnny ran (yes, RAN) out of the car and touched Stephen before me (I did not realize this was a requirement)... but LC and I both got to Stephen and were the first FULL TEAM. Point is, win or no win, it was pretty fun! Thank you Stephen for a great morning!

Afterwards, the starving/thirsty group of contestants went to grab some refreshments and head to Zilker for volleyball. For the first 30 minutes or so, it was just Thomas, Johnny, Stephen, and I hitting the ball around. I believe the phrase "Knuckle puck" was used over and over again. Eventually Mr. & Bud came and we started to hit the ball around. LC finally got back from her run/jog (despite the fact that we kept seeing her run around us--and by her, I mean this old man with long hair/beard and shirt that showed his belly) and joined us. Me, Stephen (the two former members of Team Good, the Fall 2007 UT Water Volleyball IM Champions), Buddy & LC were on one team and Johnny, Mr. & Thomas were on the other. Eshe came with baby Nia and they sat and watched us play. They often clapped... but usually when someone did something wrong. :) It finally became 5 and time to leave. We stopped by Daily Jews Juice to get cool refreshing libations.

Thomas, Johnny and I went back to the apartment to shower and get ourselves dolled up for the Singers show.

What can I say about the Singers show? I definitely felt that it was better than last semester's. Almost every specialty act was deserving of its specialty spot--which I don't think could necessarily be said of some previous shows (including some I've been in). The solos in the group numbers were all pretty solid and the costumes were adorable--namely the girls in the Enchanted song and the boys in Celebration.

Afterwards the Alums went to eat at Santa Rita. This was pretty fun... we were loud, and our server McQueen was entertaining. Our drinks (and Eshe with her drinks) were also entertaining. We did our usual critique of the show, which was less fun to do this semester than semesters before. :) We did more raving than ranting I think. And that's saying a lot, cause you know how we love a good rant--especially Johnny. Though I'm sure he did his share.

Then me, Thomas, Mr., Buddy & Johnny went to the after show party. We got there entirely too early (maybe the rest of us are running on real people time, while Singers is still running on Singers time) but were able to enjoy our keg foam just as well. Here are some highlights of the party:

- Me pulling a MAJOR LC moment.
- Sitting and chatting (i.e., commiserating) with Hailey (the other 'outsider').
- Heard some good in the halls verses.
- Heard some BAD in the halls verses (which on occasion can be just as good as hearing the good ones).
- Sat some more with Hailey and observed the intense things that were happening ALL around us.
- Ended the night singing "Somebody to Love" with Tony :)

Sunday:

Thomas and I grabbed some Madams and headed to Lisa & Mike's to get some Chamberlain family time in. We hung out with baby Luke and Lisa. We napped while watching Order of the Phoenix (this is actually a very frequent occurrence in that household). Then he headed back to Dallas and I vegged out for a bit. Went to 8 o clock mass (took me FOR-EV-ER to find parking) and called it a night. I'm pretty sure. I can't really remember what all I did that night. Either way, it was a great weekend. :)

A Not-So-Startling Revelation

Another song to add to the "note to self" list of songs NOT to play at work.

"Totally Fucked" from the Spring Awakening soundtrack.

The other two songs from previous blog posts/experience include:

"Fuck Her Gently" by Tenacious D
"Fuck Was I" by Jenny Owens Young

So... the revelation:

Songs that have the word "FUCK" in it are not--I repeat NOT--safe for work.

I know. It's an absurd rule, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

My Love Dad

I drove to work today and listened to NPR and the story of an American US Naval officer who was visiting Vietnam on a Naval warship. He was of Vietnamese descent. 39 years old. Fled Vietnam on April 30th, 1975. He hadn't thought he'd come back so soon in his life (34 years, though seemingly long, is soon to a lot of people) and as I sat and listened to it, my eyes teared up and I got really emotional. I have six siblings similar to this man--not to mention my parents and aunts and uncles and cousins that have gone through the same journey he did. I know snippets of stories--some I'm not 100% sure about.

I e-mailed my dad and told him that I need him to tell me these stories. He wrote an entire book on it, but it's all in Vietnamese. My dad's gift of rhetoric is amazing, but that just means very long metaphors and analogies that I'm surely not going to understand. I just wanted him to tell me his story, bit by bit. This was his reply, typos and all.

My love daughter Melissa,
I am very happy to know you want to know about our family' escape. I will relate for you somedays or you can read this story in the piece of story I wrote a long time ago. OK my love dasughter?
Dad,
Vy
Seriously. How precious is my dad?

The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan

[I may spoil some things for anyone who plans to read it. Overall, I don't think I do... but just in case, here's your alert.]

Grade: A-

I lost a loved one almost 4 years ago to leukemia. My mom had breast cancer the fall of my senior year. Just a month ago, today, one of my niece's closest friends died at the age of 17 of renal cell cancer. The mention of the C-word and the evil that it creates has become something that easily brings tears to my eyes. So when I saw signed copies of The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan for sale at Love Field, I figured it might be a good read during my flight with Thomas to Boston. Unfortunately, I was still working on finishing Dumas's The Three Musketeers, which took me about 9 months to finish.

I finally picked it up a week or so ago and eventually fell in love with it. I had read some reviews that tainted my mind as I started to read the book. Apparently some readers felt that Kelly let her father play such a "larger-than-life" [every review said this] role in her life... and she kind of let her mother and husband, Edward fall to the wayside. Initially, I felt the same way. She went on and on and on. In a way, it made me feel like I was back in high school and I was listening to my friends go on and on about the crazy shenanigans they went through that weekend. It was nice to hear, and I'm sure it was faaaabulous for them, but frankly, it just felt like bragging and I really just wanted to roll my eyes. A lot of her stories, however, circled around her mother. Her mother's strength of character. Sure the father was the happy-go-lucky goofball kind of dad, but her mother was there for Kelly in her time of need, and she stood tall and beside her husband through his time of need. Towards the end, she also paints a pretty good picture of her husband--especially the chapter when she describes their trip to Yale--and his great deal of patience.

I think the best thing about Kelly's writing was her candor. She was sometimes embarrassingly candid and honest about her life. There were some moments that even made me squirm a bit (birth chapter, anyone?) Sometimes she was so gut-wrenchingly honest that it made you want to run up to her and hit the backspace key. In one chapter she describes her fright as a mother when the beach party she's attending all realize that they can't find her daughter, Claire. Thoughts are swarming through her head, but finally she she silently offers to God her father. The backbone of her life. She, as a mother, would give anything--even something as important to her as her father--for the safety of her youngest daughter. It's one of those moments where I realized that she really DIDN'T have to tell us that private moment and private thought that she had. I appreciated it so much, I had to bump it from a solid B+ to an A-.

It's a good read. There's a lot more I can say about it, but... I'd rather not. So... go read it :)

One more thing... JUST for my friends...

It's been a GREAT October

No really, it has been.

OU Weekend was great. Buddy and I rode there together and it was so fun! We stopped in Waco to see the bears and have a photo shoot (which reminds me: I'm fat). The entire ride consisted mostly of Glee songs... and belting them at the top of our lungs. This was awesome. We got to Ken's and of course he was his usual UT awesome self. He, I believe, teared up during "It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" a la Singers again. We were joined by some other fellow Singers alums: Mr. Matt, Jack, Sarah & Tony. Then we went to go eat at El Fenix... hilarity ensued. Then, Buddy and I drove to Mr.'s where we shared a splendid evening full of cookies, brownies, The Office, Always Sunny, and, of course, Glee. We also did a lot of dancing upstairs. Mostly to "Keep Holding On." Also, for anyone who doesn't know, Mr. likes to sleep naked.

We woke up and relished the fact that we didn't have to wake up early and eventually made our way to Scottish Rite to see our Singer babies sing. They let the alums sing the medley with them! I ate that shit up. When their time is up, they'll realize how much fun we had doing that. So thank you. :)

Then we went to Northpark, my favor-fave of the Dallas malls. Mostly because it's about 5 minutes from Thomas's house, so I go there all the time. I forgot out fun it was to see OU fans looking stupid putting their horns down. The singers sang in the foyer on the first floor under the giant opening by the food court. This enabled the OU fans to be able to shout their stupid chant above Singers. They were mostly polite and only chanted DURING "The Eyes of Texas," which I appreciated. We did a bit more shopping and parted ways. I was going to be staying at the Wilder's that night. Before the end of the night, however, Thomas and I drove downtown and met Mr. & Bud at the Iron Cactus for a Texas Alum Tailgate. We proceeded to walk down to the West End. Hilarity (...and madness) ensued. And Rosa Parks scared the SHIT out of me. I felt like I did my good deed of the night by pointing out to some girls in a bathroom line that there was a much less crowded bathroom further back in the Spaghetti Warehouse. Still no missed connection from that night, though.

The next day was the game, which I barely woke up in time for. Thomas made me ramen over and over again. And for this, I love him oh so very much. Mostly the part where he doesn't judge me for WANTING ramen. I love ramen... but that'll be another post entirely.

---------This was saved as a draft, and now that I'm back to it, I don't really feel like writing more about the weekend, so I'm just gonna put some highlights---------

- went to see Paranormal Activity with Thomas and Buddy
- saw John & Stef at Northpark with the book (and the ring)
- went to Hat & Tie, which was pretty good. Lots of gays now, which is good for the gays... not so good for the girls.
- Buddy slept over at the Wilders because he was in no state to drive himself home that night (windowface picture).
- went to church with the Wilders and lunch afterwards
- headed back to Austin with Buddy

Other things that have happened:
- Work Dinner at Trudy's with Shannon.
- Dinner with Sinae and her friend at Frank & Angie's. Drunkeness at Johnny's and my apartment with Maggie, LC, Buddy & DP.
- Hungover (LIKE A BOSS!) at work.
- Saw Spring Awakening--decided a few days later that I liked it.
- Another pair of parents got divorced.
- Collegemoviereview.com's secret movie screening of The Fourth Kind!
- It got cold!
- Karaoke and dt with Johnny, Buddy, LC, Maggie, Daniel Pinkston & BGo.
- Dinner at Zen and shopping at Lucy in Disguise!
- Halloween shopping... "YEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!"
- Halloween!
- Houston for Halloween!

Peace out.

TRIPS!

Lunchtime and I am spending it with my blog.

December 16th - 20th: Assuming we find tickets that fly out when we want to after work, Buddy, Thomas, and I are flying out Wednesday night to Montgomery, AL to be there early Thursday morning to see Carl for his officer commissioning ceremony. That'll be pretty cool. Originally, the idea was that we would go there, then rent a car that'll let us drive up to the ATL (which is only a few hours away) and then hang out there and fly back, probably from there. After talking to Carl, I found out that he was able to get leave right after training and he'll be home for the holidays. This means he'd be driving back to Texas all by his lonesome. That's when I smelled a roadtrip. So Carl said that there should be room, though maybe it'll end up slightly snug in the back, for the four of us and our luggage to make it on a roadtrip back to Texas from Alabama. Should be fun!

January 25th-ish: Possibly go to Miami to see Lexing & Prema? It'd be so awesome if I actually could go! Prema's visiting Lex, who's been working in Miami since, I think, August. Lex's bday is the 25th, so that's why Prema's visiting then. I really would like to see them! It'd be like a piece of Paris in Miami! Now if only we could talk Piero into coming too...

Spring at some point: San Diego! Hopefully I'll get to see the kids during Christmas break, but I'd still like to see them in their new home in San Diego! And... I love San Diego. The other day, Friday, when I was heading home to Houston, I was slightly disappointed that I was leaving such beautiful Austin weather (this was before it started to rain all over the place). It felt VERY MUCH like San Diego beach weather. Awesome. I'd like to hit up the zoo again, since it'll be nicer weather and not as hot as July/August. Hopefully the beach will be warm enough (although the water... I'm just shivering thinking about it). Maybe I can take the kids to the drive in movie? Not sure if they'd find it fun though... If Buddy comes with, which was the original plan, maybe we'll go to Tijuana, since it's only like, 10 minutes away. I haven't been to San Diego since I've been old enough to... do things... so that'll be fun!

May: Boston again. Maybe I'll try to get it so that I can go to another city or something as well, but I'm going to try my best to see Jenny graduate! It'd be so fun to get to see her again and be there for her! The only downside is that I don't get to see Boston during a different season... but oh well, it was still nice up there. Maybe Jen and I can go to NYC?

Point is, I want to go to there.

Into the West

Gabriela "Gabby" Romero, my niece's dear friend, passed away the morning of Friday, October 2, 2009. She was only 17. She was so young. She had decided a few weeks earlier that she would end her chemo treatments. What a decision for someone to make. Especially someone who had lived, to most people, so little of her life. She was very much loved. If she didn't know it before passing away, she definitely knew it afterwards. Waves and waves of kids sporting bright pink tshirts and face paint filled the stands of Pearland's gym to support the Lady Horns (currently under the name Team Gabby) in what would be their toughest game yet. Not only were they playing the #1 team who had a lot to lose if they lost this game (at the time, Dobie was the only undefeated team), but they had already lost one of the most important things to them that morning.

When I got to Pearland, they were just beginning to announce the names of the girls on the Varsity Pearland volleyball team. Each girl held a rose in her hand and as her name was called, she ran across the court and handed a rose to one of the girls on the Dobie team. It was a very touching moment. I think my brother got a little emotional himself, as I kept hearing him sniffle as he recorded the whole game opening.

After the game--they lost, unfortunately--Dobie News and a local high school sports channel interviewed my niece, one of Gabby's old friends and one of the leaders of the volleyball team. Afterwards, I gave her a big hug and told her how I wished they didn't have to go through all of this, and that I was so proud of how they had handled it and how they had carried themselves.

I took my nephew Austin and his friends to Gabby's house where a lot of the kids were holding a candlelight vigil. The streets surrounding her cul de sac were so packed I could barely drive through them. The whole middle of the street was filled with kids. I'm not exaggerating. It was just one gigantic pile of Gabby's loved ones.

The next morning I listened to Into the West.

Mortality is something so... scary to really think about. To be only 17 and have to face your own mortality the way Gabby did? And of course I can't think of something like this and not think about Anne. She was only 24. I'm only 23. By my age she'd already fought leukemia and beaten it once. What the hell have I done?

I've come to the realization that I don't think I'll be doing much that's great in this lifetime. But I can love. And I will love and love and love and live to love as much as possible. Love is a many splendored thing and I will love until my heart bursts.

I think the reason why I love Into the West so much is because although it is definitely a song written to comfort the one who is/had been physically suffering... it definitely is comforting to the one who had been their strength the whole time. The line, which is definitely--easily--my favorite in the song, "Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see all of your fears will pass away," is a line that I have imagined many times. I've imagined Anne saying it to David the night she passed away and I find it so comforting because that's the kind of person she was. So loving, so caring. So concerned about everyone else.

On a much lighter note, I had a great time at happy hour with Maggie, Buddy & Sarah! Sometimes you just need to sit and shoot the shit with your friends. I loved my drink, my tapas, and--you guessed it--I love my friends :)

Love Love Love...

Elliot Cowan's my Darcy

L->R:
Edmund Lenthal Swifte, Sir Lawrence Olivier, David Rintoul, Colin Firth, Matthew Macfadyen or Elliot Cowan

I found this collage of photos on a blog and I was not aware that Sir Lawrence Olivier played Mr. Darcy. I'd like to see that one. At any rate. Though I had scene clips of Colin Firth as Darcy (and I think he's a spectacular Darcy--though his Mark Darcy character might have more to do with that than P&P) and I've seen Matthew Macfadyen's Darcy, I think my Darcy is the most recent Elliot Cowan. This isn't based on who I think played the role best. It's based more on the fact that Elliot Cowan's Darcy is the one I fell in love with.

I think I'm going to go put Lost in Austen on and fall asleep to it now.

It's Always Sunny in Austin

My new favorite show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, does not have characters that should be, in any way, EVER admired by anyone. They are despicable, immoral, terrible human beings. That being said, I love them all and have found myself to mirror their language, if not their behaviors. Mostly Sweet Dee's.

Sweet Dee just bought a new car. Her twin brother, fake Dad, and two friends hitched a trailer to her car while she was in the bathroom and tried to drive off on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. What does she say when she runs out and finally catches up to them waiting at a red light? "Goddammit! Get out!"

Later in the same episode, Mac & Charlie are trying to hotwire her car to leave, again, without her. She walks up to them pointing out how proud she is of having talked down the price of a Soul Asylum ("Runaway Train") tape. When she realizes what Mac's trying to do, she screams, "Oh, goddammit!"

So... I've noticed myself saying this phrase quite often lately.

So sorry if I say it around you and it's offensive. :)

Reader's Block?

Why has it been so hard for me to read? I've had Pride & Prejudice for about a week and a half now and I haven't even gotten halfway through it. I barely finished the first volume today. Granted, I only get a limited time to read it... but I'm still disappointed in myself. I will NOT take as long to finish this book as it did for me to finish the Three Musketeers (8 months, anybody?) Anyway, I WILL put a dent in this book the rest of tonight and tomorrow. It's going to be a leisurely weekend!

Maybe I should go to the gym and read...

Better Weekend

I think Thomas read my post last weekend and felt sorry for me, because he came to Austin this weekend! Friday night we went downtown for Kristi's birthday. I think we all had a pretty good time. One of those nights where we all jump around excitedly because we're having fun. I believe the boys made up a new dance called the "Eye-Fall" which was inspired by... someone's eye falling out at Gruv. We all spent more money than we wanted to on bottle service for Kristi--but that's the price of loving your friend.

Daniel Pinkston came downtown... so that was interesting. It was nice seeing him, seeing as how I probably haven't seen him since the Spring '06 show.

Brandon & Natalie were in town! I let them stay at my apartment since Natalie's friends were already a pretty big party and she was hesitant to ask the person they were staying with to let Brandon stay too. It was overall a really good Friday night!

Saturday morning I woke up and made cupcakes and then the four of us (me, Thomas, Brandon & Natalie) met up Mr., Buddy & JJ for lunch at Trudy's. Then T and I headed off to College Station to see Katie. I wanted to visit her this weekend since she just had a birthday and I haven't yet visited her at her apartment. I really like her place--it's super cute! We went to eat Pho and Rachel joined us for a bit. I felt bad because I was really looking forward to having brunch on Sunday morning with her, but our plans changed a bit and we only got to hang with her Saturday night! I'm glad she was able to see me at all though!

Anyway, Thomas and I watched the beginning of the Texas vs. Tech game while I iced Katie's cupcakes... but then... Katie took her temperature and it seems she had a fever. Long story short, she needed to go to the ER to make sure it wasn't a very severe fever and that's where we spent most of our College Station Saturday night. I didn't mind though. I was still getting to spend time with them, albeit in a waiting room watching old Tom Cruise (pre-crazy) movies. Mission Impossible (The first one) and Minority Report. There were douchey mcdouchebag Aggies in the ER, but whatever, one would expect that on game night.

Then we went back to Katie's and hung out until I eventually passed out.

This morning we woke up a little before 10 and hit the road. It's Derek's bday and Thomas wanted to be sure to be back in Dallas in time for dinner.

Overall, great weekend. I'm now watching LOTR Two Towers and making lasagna (... I'm being very loose with ther term 'making') for Johnny & myself.

Bored.

This weekend was a reminder of how much I miss Thomas. I think for the most part I've done really well with him being gone (a... month and a half now?) I've kept myself busy, mostly with trying to decorate Johnny's & my apartment. This morning I woke up about 8:30, did some random organizing and then made Johnny and myself breakfast. I decided to run some errands and Johnny went to Maranda's.

The errands were nice to get out of the way. I went to Chase to deposit the check that Progressive had given me after that girl and Thomas hit each other in my car. Then I went to Half Price Books. I have one right by my new apartment. It's my new favorite place. I've bought a ridiculous amount of books and today I bought a game and some dvds. I got Ever After (Lisa has a copy, but I figured it's time to get one for myself) and I found (for 10 bucks only, mind you) the 2-disc Elizabeth I HBO dvd. The one with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons... and Hugh Dancy. Ooh it'll be good! Then I went to Frys to buy ink. It's kind of sad, but the only reason I wanted to buy ink was to print pictures... which probably would be cheaper to just do at a Walgreens, but I'm entirely too lazy for that.

I was determined to finally finish reading The Three Musketeers. It's been awhile since I started (... mid January, anybody?) Yeah, it took me eight months to finish a stupid book. And it's not that I didn't like... I did--but it just had a lot of slow/stopping points and once I stop--it's REALLY HARD to get back on (e.g., the gym).

In October Buddy and I are taking Thursday and Friday off and going to Dallas for OU weekend. Before we head up to Dallas though, we're hoping to be able to see Johnny & Kayla (and maybe JJ?) at school! Then in December we, along with Thomas, are going to Carl's graduation! I'm so exciiiiiited! Chi Tram said we could come up for Thanksgiving if we wanted... that'd be fun!

Anyway... I'm glad I still have my friends in town that I do have... but on weekends like this, though I'm glad to have a weekend on my own where I CAN do nothing... it's a little sad.

Just testing...

I'm just testing out the blogging tool on my iPhone. I'm using the lite one since it's free, but if I like it enough, I may consider buying it for $2. Only because I have a $10 gift card from Crystal's company! And I'd also get to post pictures! I have two that I added onto my facebook yesterday. The first was from happy hour at Zocalo with Buddy, JJ and one of their friends, and the other was from going shopping at HEB alone and hungry. I think I'll like this.

If only I could get the feed of my friends' blogs that I'm following!

My Life According to the Killers

My friend Eshe had this up on facebook. I'm not one to do the facebook-tag thing usually, but I did want to do it cause it seemed interesting, so I went for it! You're supposed to pick one artist and then choose song titles from that artist to fill the following categories. I chose the Killers was 1. They're obv my fave, and 2. They have an extensive song list... I think I'll do Regina or Taylor next... just for fun!

Pick your Artist: The Killers
Are you a male or female: Human (haha)
Describe yourself: Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll
How do you feel? Everything Will Be Alright
Describe where you currently live: The World We Live In
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? Sam's Town
Your favorite form of transportation: Joy Ride
Your best friend? Jenny Was a Friend of Mine (this is pretty much too perfect)
You and your best friends are: All The Pretty Faces
What's the weather like? A Dustland Fairytale
Favorite time of day: Midnight Show
If your life was a TV show, what would it be called: All These Things That I've Done
Your relationship: Sweet Talk
What is life to you: This Is Your Life

Oh! I got my iphone on Sunday! Now if I could only get that job...

Dinner Date with Crazy Carl

I realized today that I missed Carl. Yes, he's still in Austin, but not for long--and I hadn't seen him for 5 days. Soon (in a little over a month) he's headed off to the Air Force... and actually less than a month (closer to three weeks) he's leaving Austin and going to Dallas for a couple of weeks. Thinking about him leaving made me really sad... so I asked him to dinner tonight. We met at the Madam Mam's on Anderson and had a BALL. It was kind of funny though... before he got there, I sat and thought to myself, "What the hell are we gonna talk about?" I mentioned this to Carl as we were leaving (after not having suffered through any awkwardness at any point during dinner) and he mentioned the Seinfeld episode when Elaine & George try to hang out together without Jerry.

Carl is one of those guys that you just know is a good guy. I think I'll miss that most about him. I was always happy that Thomas had a best friend like Carl--cause you know Carl would never steer him wrong (despite the fact that EVERYONE has been steering CARL in the wrong direction lately... Celebrity crush anyone?) And he's also crazy. CRAZY CARL! And we're all going to miss Crazy Coin Collecting Cowabunga Carl!

[Updated 2:10 am 08/08/09] Retraction--ahh what the hell, I still love him. Nevermind.

People Coming and Going from Austin

Just some photos of Jenny's visit to Austin:

High school ended 5 years ago, but not this duo!

Jenny at 6th and Congress

Byron's Goodbye--just like the good ol' LHS days.

Barton Springs & Zilker Summer Musical

Old Songs, Same Feelings

I've been listening to some of my "old" music--stuff I listened to in high school. One song I've been listening to on repeat (practically) is Bright Eyes' "Touch." I used to love this song. And after not listening to it for years and years... I happened upon it on my ridiculously large itunes library. The second I heard the music--it took me back. I don't even know when I listened to this song back in the day... but I certainly remembered the feeling of "the brokenness inside as hope and less collide." I went on songmeanings.com--something I like to do when I want to see how other people interpret a song. The first comment was written in 2002. The most recent was in March of this year, and the person wrote, "this song was at one time so important to me... i just listened to it for the first time in a few years and it broke my heart again." Ditto.

The Guthrie Girls

I didn't go to Monday Night Dinner this week. Instead, I had dinner at Hula Hut with Lisa, Mike, baby Luke, and... two of my favorite people in the world! Mary Ann and Grace Guthrie! Mary Ann is always a pleasure to be with and see (the last time I saw her was when she came to my graduation!) Seeing Grace was a real treat! I haven't seen her since... probably the last time I went to Corpus Christi (January 2007).

I always forget how wonderful she is. She just graduated high school and she's such a beautiful and great person. The best thing is--she's such a hoot to be around. She is HILARIOUS! Mary Ann has always been fun and entertaining--the stories she tells us are always fun to listen to. Grace is just as entertaining. The best part is when she makes comments about how unnecessary her mom's comments are. She's going to A&M (le sigh) but that just means she'll be closer to Austin! I hope she does take me seriously on my offer to house her anytime she wants to come visit. She really is more like a sister than anything to me. I asked her what she was planning to study and she said she's going to do psychology. She'd like to do something similar to the women that saw Anne at M.D. Anderson. She said they'd come into the children's wing, talk to the kids (or in this case, 23 year old Anne) and make sure that they were coping well. Originally she had wanted to do oncology nursing... but figured it would "break" her. Grace has always been so strong and confident--so sweet and caring--so much like her sister. I think that's what really got to me. It reminded me of how great a person Anne was.

After dinner, I didn't stay at Lisa & Mike's like a normally would. I guess I just needed some alone time. Drove home and listened to some Killers on the way. "Why Do I Keep Counting," one of my original favorites from the Sam's Town cd, started the tears rolling--right around the "... if I only knew the answer, if I changed my way of living, and if I paved my streets with good times, will the mountain keep on giving?" There's something about the way Brandon sings that part that just makes my heart ache every time I hear it.

It was a different kind of cry this time. It wasn't my usual Anne-day kind of cry. I wasn't mad she was gone, and I wasn't really sad she was gone. I just really missed her. I missed how funny she was--without every REALLY meaning to be. She was always SO SO nice too. Almost too nice, considering how crazy my family can be. She'd try so hard not to step on anyone's toes or offend anyone--even when it was necessary to.

One time, Anne and David came over for dinner over at Lisa & Mike's. Earlier that week, we had bought these self-re-enflatable whoopie cushions at the one spot at Target. You just had to press it, and it would make the typical whoopie-cushion sound, and then it'll re enflate itself (similar to squeezing a sponge) and you can just keep doing it over and over and over again. Well, Lisa made a comment about how her stomach wasn't feeling so well and she went into the half bathroom that was downstairs right by the dinner table. She went to town on that whoopie cushion. Of course, Mike and I were in on it--but David and Anne weren't. David was in disbelief, but didn't really react with much more than a surprised face. Anne on the other hand had to run upstairs to keep herself from laughing too loudly. I had already run upstairs to keep myself from blowing the joke, and Anne found me--but just assumed I was laughing for the same reason she was. It's probably one of my favorite Anne memories.

Grace said they put a new headstone at her grave. They planted palm trees too. I'd really love to see it, seeing as how it's been a 2 and a half years since I have. It was really hard when I went before--but it was only a year after she had passed, so maybe that was why.

Sometimes I listen to songs that make me think of her. I close my eyes and imagine I'm just floating--in the water or in the air, I'm not really sure--but I'm just floating, very light, very comfortable, and Anne is floating around with me... with a glass of wine--she always has a glass of wine.

"You won't be coming back and I didn't get to say goodbye
I really wish I got to say goodbye...
And I'm sure the view from Heaven beats the hell out of mine here
And if we all believe in Heaven, maybe we'll make it through one more year"

Things Will Change

Job search is going nowhere.
Job stability is currently alright.
Thomas is moving back to Dallas.
I will use this as an opportunity to get in tune with myself.
Getting in shape again won't be such a bad idea either.
There are wayyyy too many things to talk about to actually blog about.

I bought a new dress.
I'm trying to do a better job at saving.
I need to find an apartment for Johnny & myself.
We need a third roommate... I think. We'll have to see.
I'll miss Thomas. I know it seems like I hate him, but I really don't.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was a let down the first time I saw it.
Then I saw it again tonight with two people who haven't read any of the books. This made me enjoy the movie a little more, simply because it reminded me that as a stand-alone movie, it was a good movie. I obviously knew it wouldn't come close to being as good as the book, so--despite the fact I kept SAYING that I "knew" that... I needed to actually take that into consideration.
I love Luna.

Oh and Cormac McLaggen is my new Celebrity crush.

I got my nails did!

Apparently, when I wrote my last post, I really wanted to get my nails done and an iphone. I got my nails done! No iphone though...

I've applied to just about every Austin area school district except for Hays--that's a bit further than I want to go, I might as well live in San Antonio.

I've signed up to take the 4-8 Generalist exam. That's another $120 for a test, and $50 for a book. I hope I pass. Obviously--why did I even bother saying that? It'll be nice to have more options. I'm not REALLY sure what generalist means... I mean--ANY of the core subjects? Really? Anyway...

Pflugerville was accepting applications for subs... so I went ahead and did that. Let's get on it school districts! Snatch this teacher up while she's HOT! Did I just refer to myself as hot?

Luke is amazingly cute--and he knows it too. He likes to fart in my face though. Gotta love those babies!

P.S. Surprisingly (to no one), I have not made it to the gym yet. However, today I'm wearing a skirt and I think my legs look fat in it. So... maybe this'll motivate me. ...to go next week.

If I had a ton of money...

Here are some things I would like to have/do:

1.  I would get french tip solar nails and keep them well maintained.  I feel pretty with pretty fingers.
2.  I would play sims.  I don't really have the time to play and I've never played before... but I've always known that it'd be a game I'd like, and Johnny seems to LOVE it.
3.  I would get an iphone.  I hate the iphone, but I kind of love it.  I'd get an itouch, if I didn't feel that it'd be a waste of money--I just think I'd constantly think, "well shit, I might as well have gotten the iphone".  My nieces and nephews have itouches and they play games... fun games.  I want those games.  I like games.
4.  I want a Nintendo DS.  Again, fun games.  I like games.  I LOVE games, apparently.
5.  I would shop at Anthropologie exclusively.
6.  I would repaint my front bumper--which has had paint chipping off of it since a rock (we think) hit it on one of our road trips back home.
7.  I would probably buy a hybrid.
8.  I would take my nieces and nephews on a trip!  My sister took me to Disneyworld when I was 8 and it was SO MUCH FUN!  I'd probably wait until my nieces and nephews were older (e.g., I'd take Amanda on a graduation trip to Europe!  AHH!)
9.  I would travel to Europe EVERY CHANCE I GOT!
10.  I would own a house in which my friends (or friends of friends) could live in if they needed to.  Sometimes you're down on your luck and you just need space.

This is just a short list that just popped up in my head RIGHT now.

A FANTASTIC WEEK!

This week has been full of wonderful things!

Monday -- not too great. I had to study while most of my friends were hanging out as a pre-Luis turns 21 birthday party.

Tuesday -- had to take my content exam. I was a nervous wreck. Not so much because I didn't think I knew the material, but mostly because if I DIDN'T pass it, it'd be a waste of $120 and time. THEN I'd have to wait 60 days before I could take it again. That would've put a very tight squeeze on my schedule if I wanted to start teaching in the fall. The best thing about the day wasn't so much that my test was (finally) over, but Luis turned 21! We all went to Trudy's and then the regulars (me, Johnny, Buddy, Thomas, Kayla, Kristi, Carl, Bryan--no Kyle) and some newbs (Sarah Bowers, T Rob, Laura Y, her friend) went DT for Luis's bday. Not only did that boy do all 21 shots (including an awesome body shot on... someone... special...) but he also did 17 of them without seeming to be phased AT ALL. By the time he got his 21st... he was a bit gone though. There are photos. We had to carry him. It was a fun night though--despite the fact he managed to spill two cups of water and fries at Whataburger.

Wednesday - I finally got to see LC! I think it was the first time I saw her since our Crawfish date (let's take a moment to think of the crawfish) ... okay. Anyway, she just moved into a new apartment on South Lamar. She literally JUST moved in (we sat amongst boxes during the evening). I picked up Madams (she lives THREE minutes away!) and we sat, ate, and caught up. It was a good night =D

Thursday - I got word that I passed my test. I only missed 4 questions and got 290 out of 300! I got word from my ACP that I can pretty much start applying for jobs. THIS IS INSANE! Thomas and I watched Star Trek V (oh yeah, and we're watching them in order) and then went over to Lisa & Mike's to hang out and play with Luke. I'm not sure if Thomas got to see him now that I think about it. Lisa, Thomas and I hung around and played Clue. Thomas won twice and then Lisa won. I was never close. What's up with that?

Friday - Thomas is graduating today! This, of course is exciting... and to make the day even more exciting--Buddy got the Austin job! I knew he would. When I saw that I missed a call from him... I KNEW that's what it had to be about! This is shaping up to be a great week and this coming up year is going to be spectacular! YAY!

I'm Back, Skinny Bitches!

After a brief (if you consider months brief--I mean relative to the existence of the universe, it was VERY brief), I'm back and ready. I've had to personally get some things in order, but I think I'm ready to begin again. Gotta get that beach (Hurricane Harbor?) bod! Wish me luck! Hopefully, this time I mean it!

I'm Doing It Again

That thing where I blog everything for like a day... and then I don't blog for months. I guess it hasn't been that long since my last blog--I just feel like so much has happened and I'm not really taking the time to write about it. I guess it's good that I'm living my life and not just blogging about it.

Well, obv, Luke was born. He's awesome. And by awesome I mean really really cute. And he farts loudly. I've smelled it a few times and it's not that great, but he's a baby... and he smiles when he does it, so I'll take what I can get. I'm living with Johnny officially now. Lisa and Mike moved into a new place and I'm living with Johnny while they get situated with the new babes. It's not bad. He's rarely there, and when he is... he keeps to his hole and I keep to mine. I still FEEL like I just moved in (despite the fact it's been almost a month maybe?) so I haven't done a great job about finishing the "decorating" process... that is, putting all my shit back where they belong. I want to. I just haven't. Sorry Johnny. Lovesmeans?

It doesn't help that it always takes me forever after a trip that involves a suitcase to put it up. Oh yeah, I went to Boston! Thomas and I went up to Boston to visit Jenny! It was so great to see her! I only see her a few times a year now... and even then it's only for a day or so. It was good to catch up and see what her life's like up there. My favorite part? The subway. I LOVE SUBWAYS. I'm so jealous of people who get to live with a subway. It's just efficient public transportation! Thomas and I did a lot of walking and sightseeing (especially the first day--we walked the Freedom Trail!) so my feet hurt a lot... I was able to locate a bookstore that carried a Knopf mapguide of Boston! Knopf is officially my go-to mapguide for walking cities. It's just awesome. I had one in Paris and it was vital to my trip. I should advertise for them.

I told Jennifer yesterday that I was going to hopefully start teaching in the fall. I decided it was time to let them know... especially now that I'm more sure that this is the route I want to take. At least for the next 5 years or so (Perkins Loan Forgiveness, anyone?)

Well there's your quick update. The 2 people that read this must be thrilled.

Oh and I LOOOOOOOOOOVE the new Star Trek. Watched the original movie and then the Wrath of Khan. The original SUCKED and was painful to sit through, but the Wrath of Khan was pretty good.

"I'm Exciiiiiiiiiiited" -- Hannah Neal

Okay so... you know in the song "Mixed Tape" from Avenue Q? At the end of the song, after Princeton leaves and Kate looks to the audience... she squeals, "HE LIKES ME!"

Well... in the same fashion...

"I MADE CALLBACKS!"

Same rules apply as before though. If I go tonight and then I end up with 0 parts, we shall never speak of this blog ever again.

I've been called back for the roles of Ethel Toffelmier, a Pick-A-Little Lady, and dancer. It sounds like if all else fails, dancer is hopefully default.

Nervous Breakdown

I think I'm about to have one.

I keep trying not to think about it. But I do. And I can't help it. If it turns out ok then I'll explain later. If not... then I'll probably a) delete this post or at least b) pretend it never happened and never speak about it ever again.

I need to pee, so I'll go do that.

I hate that feeling in my chest when I'm all nervous.

My Problem

I think my problem with keeping up with blogs is that I never feel like anything I have to say is that blogworthy. And if there IS something that's blogworthy, I feel like I'm not worthy of putting into words. Why does it matter? I'm not sure.

The other day at church the priest at the UCC gave a particularly good homily. He's probably normally good--I just rarely focus and pay attention. I'm normally just... staring at the floor. Or the ceiling. Or the Texas Revue shirt of the girl in front of me so I can look for Longhorn Singers on it. Anyway, he started off by talking about changes in the seasons. When he was younger, he'd look out his window and see all of the leaves falling off a tree. He said there was a bundle of leaves that just seemed to cling onto the tree. Everyday he'd wake up and cheer on those leaves that seemed so resistant to the changing of the seasons.

Then Spring came along and those leaves were still clinging onto this tree--this tree that was springing with new life! Beautiful green leaves! And yet, here's this bundle of dead leaves. It's hindering the tree of growing and breathing new life where there's this dead weight just clinging onto the tree and not letting go.

Moral of the story: Let go of all the dead weight that's holding you back from living life as best as possible.

This came right after I had a fairly difficult week dealing with the same kind of issues. That homily couldn't come at a better time. If I ever doubt that God really is listening and he really is there... I can just remember instances like this one. He's always there, I'm just not listening hard enough.

I'm probably staring at the ceiling.

High School is FOR LIFE!

I'm watching the "High School Reunion" show. It's one of the best shows EVER. I liked the first season. I was pretty into that. I don't remember much about it except the divorced couple and the best friend that came back who had hooked up with the ex wife--awk.

But this season's been pretty fun. Mostly because of Jessica, "the ugly duckling" of the group. More fun than just watching her on tv is watching the things that other bloggers and

OH SHIT!

JESSICA JUST SAID THAT MARICELA WAS A PROSTITUTE!

This show is amazing.

Okay so... there's been this secret that they've been talking about since the first episode and that shit just BLEW UP! Back to Jessica first.

Jessica is nasty. That's about all there is to say about that. Refer to this link if you are interested in more.

Maricela seems sweet. Prostitute (which her "friend" Jessica just shouted to everyone) or not, she seems down to earth and likeable. Friendly. And not THAT kind of friendly either. She likes Scott W. and Scott W. seemed to like her well enough, and then Jessica tried to talk Maricela out of liking Scott W.... since Jessica likes Scott W. too! She did it in a very slick manipulative way, "Remember in high school? You dated one guy and just stayed with the same single guy the whole time." And Maricela was like, "Oh yeah... you're right." So she asks someone else on a date (Chad?) and they ended up just talking about how she should've taken Scott out instead. And Jessica just kept smirking this stupid smirk. I'm sure SOME of why I hate Jessica is because of editting, but damn, it's not like they edited her face to look like that. Could've editted it to look better.

I hope Kara & Tom end up back together.

This is so good. I can't wait.

Oh and I LOVE Liz. I think she was a bit hypocritical with Jenny (hey--it HAD been 20 years) but COME ON... things like that stay with you! I like Jenny too!

Renee is adorable and Octavia looks young enough to still be in high school. DEFINITELY not 38!

Okay I can keep talking but I'll stop now.

Lazy

I want to say a lot of things.
I want to say it all, but I don't want to think about writing it all out.
So... in short... (and this won't make too much sense).

- Ryan Smith getting married.
- old livejournal posts from me & Jenny:  The Melon Jar
- I want a blog where everyone's posts end up on it.
- I love Taylor Swift.  I keep not wanting to, but she keeps coming up with songs I want to listen to.
- I need to start watching Ugly Betty again.
- Maki (a new sushi place at the Arbor Walk) is pretty neat.  It's like a Chipotle for sushi.  I want more.  I think I'm gonna go eat some of my leftovers right now.
- Ryan Smith is getting MARRIED!  Do I bring Thomas or do I bring a friend from high school who actually knows him?  It's going to be in OKLAHOMA!

A Late 2008 Review

I usually do a "Year in Review" kind of thing on ever blog I've ever had. This year the blogspot is the lucky one that gets it I suppose. I've decided to do something a little different. I'm using a list of primary emotions to help highlight some points of the year:

1. Love

- Christmas with the Kids: We finally got to meet and fall in love with Paulina & Nicolae, my newly adopted nieces and nephews from Romania. I learned some Romanian (... 5 year old Romanian, that is) and had such a great time exploring the things Houston has to offer for little kids! We hit up the zoo (on a very cold day), the Aquarium, the Children's Museum and the Natural Science Museum.

- 08/08/08: A bus traveling from Houston to Carthage, Missouri was carrying Vietnamese Catholics for a yearly pilgrimage. This particular bus got into an accident on the road North of Dallas. I found out about it early that morning via e-mail from my family stating that one of our uncles was on the bus. I checked the news and immediately it was on the front page of every Houston news website (and even international). I went to work but was sent home after I kept bursting into tears as the death toll slowly rose. I called my cousin Jimmy (it was also his birthday) only to find out that he didn't actually know anything about it. I called around to Dallas area hospitals and finally located him in one of them. The next day we (Lisa, Mike & I) drove up to Dallas and we stayed with Thomas's family. We visited my uncle in the hospital and it broke my heart to see him lying in his bed with his neck brace on. I just thanked God that he was okay. I was never particularly close to this uncle (he is my godfather too), but that doesn't mean I didn't love him. Should this have gone under fear/sadness?

2. Joy

- Commencement: It was great to get to sit with my Business school gals (Shanna, Crystal, Crissy, and one guy--Eric) during the commencement ceremony at the main mall. The best was seeing everyone in their graduation garb (especially Johnny who intended to not partake in the festivities) before the ceremony. That picture is, and I think will always be, one that signifies the best thing that happened to me at UT--I met my best friends.

- Wicked: Katie and I went to visit Theresa in LA. When I found out that they were playing it in LA, I told them that I didn't care WHAT else we did, but I HAD to get us tickets to Wicked. When we went to buy the tickets that morning, the only ones available were the most expensive ones--$96 or maybe $98 a ticket. I said, "Fuck it," and bought all three of us our tickets. Orchestra seats, Row N. For the first 30 minutes or so, I was on the edge of my seat... and on the edge of tears. It was beautiful. The stage, the lights, the actors--the ensemble alone sounded so wonderful! It took all the restraint I could muster to stop myself from singing along... loudly. I still sang along a little. This could possibly also go under the category of "Love" cause it's THAT good.

3. Surprise

- My 22nd Birthday: It wasn't much of a surprise, since I kind of figured it out as soon as we started walking there, but Thomas invited some of my closest friends to eat with us at Tony's Vineyard (now Drungo's?) for a surprise birthday dinner. I believe it was me, Thomas, Lisa, Mike, Johnny, Kyle, Buddy, Kayla, Mr., Carl & Rachel. Did I forget anyone? I apologize profusely if I did. Afterwards they met us at my apartment and then we headed downtown.

- Eshe's Pregnancy: I was floored when she told me. We were a Buddy's going away party at The Belmont. She decided to tell me something... and it seemed like quite a juicy secret. I really thought she was going to tell me she was engaged to some guy I've never heard of. Instead she was pregnant [...by a guy I've never heard of]! My reaction was to cry hysterically--with excitement, of course. I was so excited... I'm not sure if that is a normal reaction. I think I was proud to know that Eshe had a great backbone of friends who would be there and support her through everything.

- Dani in Miami: Dani from Tila Tequila (a show that Buddy, Johnny & I enjoyed way too much) was at a club in Miami. Johnny somehow ended up on the other side of the velvet rope and was standing there talking to Dani. He wanted her. Hell, I wanted her. Then Bible College took off her shirt, and that made everyone want to leave... which sparked the infamous Johnny Pham Miami Car Rant.

4. Anger

- Work: That kind of says it all.

- After NOM5...6?: Whichever NOM it was at Oro's in all black. That night was awesome--and terribly frustrating at the same time. Yes, this is somewhat cryptic, but everyone knows don't they? Don't you? It involved Thomas scaling walls to land on a balcony. And breaking into a friend's apartment? You remember now don't you? No? Maybe cause it wasn't really a big deal? Yeah. Like Johnny said, "Can someone PLEASE tell me why this matters?! There are kids dying in Africa! "

5. Sadness

- Last Singers Show: Singing the solos for "No Place But Texas" with Kayla & Mr. Matt was something I was dreading during the last show. I was terrified that I'd start crying. Thankfully I didn't, but it was nice to see LC & Cesar in the front row during it. MeLCeez was one of the best things about my sophomore year.

6. Fear

- Job Hunting: It didn't last too long, as I was lucky enough to get a full time offer from the office I was working part time for. But the thought of not knowing where I'll be or what I'll be doing after graduation was definitely scary.

- Thomas Missing the Train: I don't know if you can really classify it as "fear" but it was something close to it. When we went to visit Schutte in Chicago, we used the train quite a bit. On our last day there, Schutte was going to school, and on the way she was dropping us off a stop where we could walk to the museums. I believe it was called Roosevelt. We had to take a bus to get us to the stop where the train was, though. Thomas didn't hear Schutte when she said that we were going to need to run once we get off the bus to catch the train. The next thing I know, I hop on the train, turn around, and Thomas is barely getting past the bar to get in. The door shut on his face. I was probably more annoyed at him than scared--since we have phones and it's pretty easy to reconnect.

***

There are obviously more, but I can't really think of them right now. I'll add them as I remember more.

The Call

In life, you get a lot of different calls. Telephone calls are the most common. There's "the call" to some higher being that some people have gotten. I think I felt that call a few times when I was in YAC back in high school. I remember going to the retreats and you can't help but feel something calling you. I hate Christian music. I like regular music that can be viewed as having Christian undertones. Sufjan Stevens is fine with me--cause it's not outright religious to me.

But Christian Rock bands make me want to throw up. I was just watching the Seinfeld episode when Elaine borrows Puddy's car and finds out that all of his stations are preset to Christian Rock. When she brings it up, she finds out he's fairly religious, but isn't bothered by the fact that she's not because he's "not the one going to Hell." We'll save that for another time. Let's just say I, too, was grossed out by Puddy's choice of music.

The point of this post, however, was not to discuss that particular call. It's to discuss the wake up call I recently got. Or rather, a retro-wake up call. And it's to thank him for letting me back into his life. I've felt resentment towards those friends that have strayed from my life. Some I openly welcome back in without even a moment's hesitation--like nothing ever happened. Others, I'll let back in, but I don't think ever to the degree that they were before. And it saddens me to think that.

But that's just life. And that's the way life, I guess, will always be. I just wanted to say that the friends I have now are truly great friends. They've stuck with me for years. They love me for who I am. They love me for who I am despite the things they've learned about me (I hope).

Onto other things--

I dreamt last night about random weird things. The part that sticks out the most is when I went to what was apparently Anne's family. They were sitting and having dinner, and there was a little boy (who I guess was supposed to be a boy version of Lucy?) He didn't remember me. And I starting sobbing. I mean--bawling and sobbing. It hurt. It's one of those pains that stays with you when you wake up from your dream clutching your chest.

I need to go visit all of them in Corpus.

Duffy Beat Me To It

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhZ5-L9znt8
Her video for "Warwick Avenue" is exactly what I always imagined my ipod singing on the bus was like. I always figured it wouldn't be that interesting. I can't tell from this if I'm right or not! =D
The doc is out of the office for a week, ,so it'll be less busy at work. I'm looking forward to that!

Forward

Since my last post, there's been a few minor changes in my life. There hasn't been anything concrete to happen yet, but I've set a few things in motion and my future is now going in a new direction. Though I'm slightly unsure if this is 100% the right thing for me, at least I'm moving forward with my life and I'm no longer standing still. I think that idea is what's been keeping my head up these last few days--despite the fact that it's been ridiculously busy lately. I should've been grateful of the 8 minutes I had the other day for lunch. On Friday--I literally took one bite of a Thundercloud sandwich and went straight back to work. Not fun.

This weekend was a great weekend! Thomas and I decided that this was exactly how we should always spend Valentine's Day! No need to splurge on ourselves (easy for me to say, Thomas bought me a pretty ring a few weeks before!) but instead we just need to spend it with other friends and family that we love =D We had dinner with other couples (+ Carl & Buddy) and then NOM 8. It's so good to see some of those Singers! It's weird when we get to the point where we only know a few of the people though. Thankfully I'm not at that point yet. Oh, and Chris and I saw another vagina. It never fails with that guy.

Just now, at work--I got really really excited. I'm not sure what it is. I was talking to one of my patients and her husband about their upcoming cruise to the Caribbean. They're going for their 50th anniversary and they're going on two back to back trips. The first one with just them, and then the second one (same boat--same room for her) with her kids and grandchildren! How fun! Such a white thing. I hope my husband and I do crazy cool white people stuff. It's not bad that I aspire to be white, is it? =D

Kidding, a little. Why else would I be dating Thomas?

Alright. Time to get back to work.

Oh yeah, and DJ Eat 'Em Up is GROSS!

8 minutes

Despite that fact that, according to Justin Timberlake & Madonna, I could save the world possibly twice in that time span, it's barely enough time to eat your lunch.

And I should know.

Another note to self:

Jenny Owens Young's "Fuck Was I" is another song to add to that list.

Great start to a morning.

Monday, February 9, 2009

Note to Self:

Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently" is NOT--I repeat, NOT--a song that should be playing on your computer at work.

...oops.

I Need Something New

The title says it all.

I'm thinking of teaching. I figure, the salary isn't terrible (not for where I am in my life anyway) and if I get a job at a low-income school, and I can get the Teach for Texas Forgiveness Program where they cancel my federal and stafford loans--that kind of counts as extra pay. I can't wait to pay off my loans. I feel like I'm still too young and it's too early on to be talking like that though.

I love Thomas, but is it bad that sometimes I wish I was with some older man with lots and lots and LOTS of money? Money can buy me EVERYTHING. Including lots and lots of happiness.

I definitely need to get the hell out of here.

Random Things

I can't force myself to do a list of 25. It's impossible. There are simply not 25 things I can come up with, so I'm just gonna go with it and see how it goes. I'm only doing this for Johnny--let it be known. It should be fine, since I'm 99.75% sure that he's the only person who'll read this.

- I often pretend I'm in a music video. I did this most often when I used to ride the Far West bus everyday. I'd stick my ipod headphones in, stare out the window and listen to some sappy song. The song usually is some sort of coming-of-age song in which the singer is doing some kind of growing up/moving away/letting go, etc. Sometimes this can be embarrassing when I get a little carried away and it becomes obvious that my head has me somewhere far away from the bus seat I'm sitting in. That rarely stops me.

- Being the youngest of 9 kids, I've always been terrified of being considered spoiled. That was always the first thing that people would ask me when they found out I was the baby of 9 kids, "Ooooh, so they must've spoiled you rotten!" or "Ooooh, so you were a pretty spoiled kid growing up, weren't you?" Because of this, I always tried my hardest to be as unspoiled as possible. I think that's why I'm terribly indecisive. I never wanted to really put in my say--for fear that I would "get my way" and be thought of as spoiled. However, I think this makes people feel like I'm just being a child who doesn't want to make her own decisions and would rather other people make them for her. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

- I used to have internet boyfriends. I still talk to one of them every now and then, Scott Neverdusky from Clarksville, TN. I think he's 25 or 26 now. He's married to some Asian girl I think. I always knew he had a thing for Asians. I met him on a website for people who watched this show--MVH--which was a Korean music video show. I wish I could say I was too young to know better... but I was 13 and knew it was weird. But really--all this meant was that I chatted to this boy everyday and I didn't have any other boyfriends--which wasn't a problem because in middle school, I was "the friend" so no biggie. This abruptly ended the summer before my freshman year in high school. I met a boy on aol. His AOL sn was Tuneduin. His real name was Jason. He went to the same high school I was about to go to and we talked every night for a few weeks--never a "boyfriend" but I liked him a lot. He apparently was a very depressed boy who had not been taking his pills. The whole story is a little convoluted, but long story short... I called him one monday around 4--cause he was supposed to be at summer band practice that day--and his mom picked up the phone and told me that Jason hung himself that day. That was my first experience with death, really. And I blamed myself for a long time. I have my reasons--and I still think they're pretty valid.

- I always wish I was more of a girly girl. There are so many asian girls that can do the "downtown" look so easily. I rarely can do (or pull off) the "downtown" look... and even when I do, I usually forget I'm wearing make up and I end up rubbing it all off.

- On my last.fm, though I never delete tracks I listen to, I do try to sway my chart in certain ways if it looks too embarrassing. Thanks to listening to N Sync's Christmas cd during the holidays, they show up as one of my top listened to bands. I love them--but I'm not 15 anymore. They don't even have new songs. I take comfort in knowing that I have better music tastes than prettier girls.

- I hate the word "drama." I'd rather be in the midst of "drama" than hear people say things like, "Don't start any drama." On the same note, Kyle Umlang sucks.

- Green is obviously my favorite color. I feel like this is so obvious a random fact about myself that it would be almost wrong to leave it off of this list.

- Anne Elizabeth Guthrie, my brother David's girlfriend who passed away over 3 years ago is the closest thing to an angel on earth as I can imagine. I feel like people always say nice things about people after they die, but I think everything that was ever said about Anne was completely true. I often have Anne days--days in which I sit and do nothing but cry on and off. This year on the anniversary of her death, I managed to go until 9 PM before I realized it was her day--and that was because her youngest sister, Grace, wrote on my wall. Part of me was glad that I had forgotten--because I knew it wasn't as if I'd forgotten her--but because it meant I was actually letting go. The other part of me was ashamed because I think the whole idea of "acutally letting go" is bullshit. Everytime at church when the priest says the thing about "for all the unspoken prayers in your heart," I do a silent prayer for Anne's soul. Not because I don't think she's already happily in Heaven--but because I want her to know I still think about her. I went and got her necklace restrung last week. Soon I'll have it back and I'll have it on as my daily reminder of the bravest young lady on earth. On her friendster page, she wrote "Cancer Survivor at the age of 22!" That was, obviously, before she relapsed, but I wish she knew how much more there was to her than that.

- My very first plane ride ever was when I was 8 years old. I was by myself too. My sister, Rachel, flew me out to Atlanta to meet her, and then we flew to Orlando, FL together. This is where the story of the "$25 Salisbury Steak" took place. You see, we went to eat in Cinderella's castle. 8 year old Melissa ordered the salisbury steak. My sister kept asking me if I was sure that's what I wanted and I insisted that it was! I LOVED SALISBURY STEAK! That is, I loved the one that came in the frozen foods section under the Banquet brand (I still do, too). So when an actual steak came out. I think I took one bite and that was it for me. I think Rachel, to this day, still thinks I'm a picky eater.

- When I was younger, my siblings had the coolest friends. Now that I'm older, I just hope that my nieces and nephews think I have the coolest friends. I think I do.

- Although I'm not a Singer anymore, I wish it was acceptable to still sing at parties. "In the Halls" was like a free pass to roast anyone! And everyone can openly enjoy the roasting! I wonder if any Singer was clever enough to incorporate one of Michael Scott's roast quotes into the "Halls" verses at the last party. Probably not. Maybe Jack, if anyone.

- I think I have the best taste. I don't think it's pretentious, but I definitely think it's above par. Does that make it sup-par? Since below is sub-par?

- In one of my English classes, my teacher taught the use of "--"to break up a thought in sentence. I've abused it ever since. You can probably find several above.

- Mr. Golenko, my latin teacher, was phenomenal. He was the closest thing to a college professor I had in high school. He didn't treat us quite like adults (which made sense, cause we were stupid kids), but he didn't treat us like children. He just treated us like idiots--which is the best way to go with high school kids, I think. We're very receptive to that. He, however, did not like it when me and Ryan Cobb would high five each other whenever one of us got the answer right (... which was a lot).

- Johnny Pham (and I am not saying this because I know you're reading this) is one of the funniest people I know. I've said this on numerous occasions. From his first funny comment, "On a lady?", to his rant in Miami, to his obsession with disgusting wall-to-wall PDA, to his second set of 25 random things--he's so funny it makes my stomach hurt. I've decided that he can make or break a trip downtown. If Johnny feels like being Drunk Johnny--it'll be one of the best nights of your life (e.g., his 23rd birthday). If Johnny feels like keeping it chill, so will everyone else--which usually ends up pretty lame. Not saying it's your fault Johnny--but you do hold the power. Quit being so withholding with the fun.

- Since I never had allergies growing up, I didn't realize that I was having issues with allergies when I moved up to Austin. It just developed. I thought I was just sick, but then EVERYONE around me would tell me how they're just having allergy problems. After this happened several other times, I've come to the conclusion that I am not immune to this so-called "Cedar Fever" and have to suffer through it like everyone else.

- I take offense to people thinking I'm wrong. I rarely just make up shit--so when I say things, I'm usually under the assumption that I am correct. In the event that I am incorrect, I'll often admit it when I find it out (e.g., I e-mailed a patient from the office when I realized that I was wrong about a debate we were having). I have no problem with admitting I'm wrong. But when I know beyond a shadow of a doubt (white phrase) that I am correct--nothing drives me more crazy than someone insisting I'm wrong. Thomas Wilder likes to do this.

- There are some words, phrases or activities that are primarily used/done by white people. I refer to these as white things. Thomas Wilder, Kayla Bollom & Mr. Matt are guilty of 95% of these things. Kyle Umlang is 47.5% guilty.

- When I hear a song that's pretty and the lyrics are quite love-related and meaningful, I text the artist and song name to Thomas for him to review. This is for the sole-purpose of finding our song for our first dance at our wedding. The most recent one was Eisley - "Lost at Sea." I'm debating on whether or not Kate Nash's "The Nicest Thing" is worthy of candidacy.

That's enough for tonight. I'm exhausted. I hope you're happy Johnny.
